Common questions about fitted home offices

Is Surrey Canal in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London, and Surrey Canal is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to South Bermondsey station?

Yes. We cover all of Lewisham and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

What are your built-in desks made from?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. Shelves are made to suit the load they’ll carry. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

An outside wall can be colder and damper than an inside one, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doors, and each section is made to a size that will get through.

How is a home office priced?

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The mix of desk, shelving, drawers and doors, and the finish, all play a part. Everything is set out in a quote in writing after the visit.

How we make fitted home offices for Surrey Canal

A good home office has a place for everything. Drawers for stationery, cupboards for files and a printer, and shelves for books and folders, so the work surface stays clear. Doors can hide the working things when you are done. For a home in Surrey Canal, we design it all around what you need to store. If you are living with a corner too odd for a standard desk and glare from a window on the screen, that is what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

A large number of homes around Surrey Canal date from 2000 onwards, and newer homes often have compact second bedrooms that end up as offices. A desk with shelves and closed storage can share the room with a wall bed or a sofa bed. Walls in newer homes are often plasterboard on studs, so shelves are fixed into the studs or use fixings made for the board.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Surrey Canal

Trailing cables are one of the things people most want to sort. Planned routes through the desk keep cables out of sight. New sockets are for your electrician, and the furniture is planned to suit.

Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:

  • Working at the kitchen table
  • Files and folders piling up
  • A desk in the wrong light
  • A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room

If you live near Deptford Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Converting a loft to make room for an office
  • Plastering and decorating around the office
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it is easy to buy.

A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Home working in Surrey Canal: local notes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 37% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Surrey Canal, with about 34% built between 1973 and 1999, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Within a mile of the centre of Surrey Canal, 4 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. About 13% of homes around Surrey Canal were built before 1919, well below the figure for Lewisham as a whole, about 36%, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. So the walls behind home offices here are more likely to be later brick, block or plasterboard, and they’re checked at the design visit.

Queen's House, about 2.1 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church of St Augustine, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent.

How fitting day works

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. Either way, the finish is the one set out in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. To begin, message us from the contact page; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.

Before fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Advice

Why bespoke in Surrey Canal?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. Fitted furniture stays put, and it makes more of the room. Which suits you depends on your plans. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the design visit.
