TV and media units in Turnpike Lane: what you get

Where the TV will be wall-mounted, the unit is designed around where the bracket goes. If the TV stands on the unit instead, the top is sized and positioned for it, with the cables kept out of sight. People normally come to us about equipment running hot in a closed cupboard and leads that show from every angle; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Solid brick external walls are standard in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and internal walls may be brick or lath and plaster. Since a large share of the homes around Turnpike Lane date from before 1919, we check which you have before deciding how TV and media units are fixed. Lath and plaster in particular needs fixings chosen for it.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bespoke furniture takes longer than buying from a shop: there is a design visit, a quote and making time. If you are renting or moving soon, a standalone stand may suit you better. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

The problems TV and media units solve

Boxes, consoles and routers on the floor are a familiar sight. A unit gives every box its own space, with air to keep it cool, and keeps the floor clear.

We’re often asked to help with:

  • Set-top boxes stacked on a stand
  • Equipment running hot in a closed cupboard
  • Clutter around the TV
  • Leads that show from every angle

For families living near North Harringay Primary School, TV and media units can be planned with low cupboards for toys and higher shelves for everything else.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • Whether they measure the room themselves
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Your questions about TV and media units in Turnpike Lane

My home in Turnpike Lane is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Turnpike Lane?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Who moves the sockets for a built-in TV wall?

We don’t do electrical work. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

What if I buy a larger TV?

The space can be sized for a larger TV so the unit suits your next set. Mention the largest screen you might buy when we visit.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Normally not. Fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission, even in a conservation area. If the building is listed, works affecting its character may need listed building consent.

What affects the price of TV and media units?

Each room is quoted on its own: the size, what goes inside, the finish and how square the room is all count. You will get a quote in writing once we’ve measured up.

Where other trades come in

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Repairing plaster or redecorating
  • Connecting the TV signal or internet
  • Any electrical work (your electrician handles that, and Part P covers some of it)

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we will give you a straight answer. How a job runs, step by step.

What goes into it

  • Spray-painted finish

  • Birch plywood

How fitting day works

When we arrive on fitting day, we start by protecting your floors and the route from the front door to the room. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop, a piece at a time. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the unit and how many cupboards and shelves it has, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so details of permits, bays and any loading restrictions help. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturdays are possible by arrangement.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room and your equipment.
  2. At the design visit, we measure up and plan the screen space, cable routes and ventilation with you. New sockets or wiring are for your electrician, so it helps to have them in mind early.
  3. Your quote follows, with the design, materials and finish set out, ready for you to check.
  4. We make the cupboards, shelves and panels in our workshop, with openings for cables and air.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. We check the doors and shelves with you before we leave.

How to prepare

  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street
  • Empty the space we’ll be working in
  • Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Advice

TV and media units for homes in Turnpike Lane

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Turnpike Lane were built before 1919 (about 66%) and since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Turnpike Lane include Church of St John the Baptist (greek Orthodox) (Grade II*), under half a mile south, and Tower of Old Parish Church of St Mary (Grade II*), under half a mile west. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. All of London, Haringey included, is inside the ULEZ. It applies to the vans that deliver and fit furniture in Turnpike Lane, as it does anywhere else in London. We plan parking and access with you during the design visit.

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St John The Baptist (greek Orthodox), walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Bruce Castle, about 1.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for TV and media units.
