How it is made

Moisture-resistant MDF

We use moisture-resistant MDF for many doors and carcasses, because it stays flat and paints beautifully. It’s a good choice for utility rooms and cupboards on external walls.

Spray-painted finish

Spray-painted cupboards arrive finished, which keeps work in your home to fitting.

Fitted cupboards for homes in South Bank

Meters and fuse boards often sit in the most awkward places, like by the front door or in a hallway corner. A fitted cupboard can hide them neatly, while keeping them easy to reach. Engineers and meter readers will need access, so the doors or panels are planned with that in mind. If you’re living with using the full height of a room and storage in a corner nothing else fits, that is what fitted cupboards are for, made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Without a loft, a flat’s storage has to come from the hall, the recesses and the rooms. With most households around South Bank in purpose-built flats, that is often the starting point. Shallow cupboards and seats with storage add a lot without taking much floor.

Our quotes are written in plain words. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished, all taken from the design visit.

What affects the price in South Bank

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • Your postcode and the borough
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • How you want to use the space

The quote is built from the design visit. We take full measurements, see how true the walls and floors are and work through the design together. Afterwards, we send a written quote. To book one, use our contact form.

Is it time for fitted cupboards?

Some people want to hide a boiler, meter or fuse board. They aren’t much to look at, yet they must stay easy to reach, and that shapes the design. Doors, panels and ventilation are planned around them.

Requests we hear often include:

  • A linen cupboard on the landing
  • A cupboard for a recess or odd corner
  • A cupboard for the meters with easy access
  • A utility room with proper storage

If you live in a flat close to London Waterloo station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Standalone furniture moves with you; fitted cupboards stay with the house. Fitted storage is built in for good and is designed for this home. It’s worth thinking about how long you plan to stay. Standard furniture doesn’t allow for boxed-in pipes, risers or meter cupboards, leaving gaps or blocking access. Fitted furniture is built around them.

How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Questions we’re often asked

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in South Bank?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the measuring visit.

I live in a flat in South Bank. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

At the design visit, we measure the way in not just the room. Fitted cupboards are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Is it possible to build a cupboard around a boiler?

Yes. We design the cupboard to keep the clearances and ventilation set out in the boiler maker’s instructions, with doors that open wide for servicing. Work on the boiler itself is a job for an engineer on the Gas Safe Register.

What happens when you come to measure?

It is a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a quote in writing.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch, and we will see what we can do.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.

Fitting day, step by step

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, which keeps the lines straight. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. For a flat, the stairs, landings, lift and doors are measured not just the room: the furniture is made in sections that fit through all of them. Some older blocks have small lifts or none.

  1. You tell us where the cupboards should go.
  2. At the design visit we measure at several points, as walls and floors in older homes are rarely flat or level.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. We make the cupboards in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each cupboard is set level on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the wall.
  6. Your finish is sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site; go gently with it at first while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Advice

Making use of awkward spaces in South Bank

In the area around South Bank, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 36%) and the years since 2000 (about 32%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Within a mile of the centre of South Bank, 37 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. So a van fitting furniture in South Bank normally needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know about parking near your home at the measuring visit.

Benjamin Franklin House, about 0.4 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, fitted cupboards can fill recesses that are rarely a standard size. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Royal Festival Hall, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
