Widmore Fitted Cupboards
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted cupboards in Widmore starts with a design visit, and everything is made in our workshop.
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- A linen cupboard on the landing
- A cupboard for a recess or odd corner

About our fitted cupboards in Widmore
The carcasses and doors are made from moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood, chosen for the job each part does. MDF is stable and takes paint well, while birch plywood is good for long shelves. The finish is either spray painted in our workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. If you’re living with a cupboard for the meters with easy access and space for laundry, cleaning things and boots, that’s what fitted cupboards are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
Not every home has a loft conversion, a bay or a cupboard under the stairs, but almost every home has somewhere storage could go. For a home in Widmore, the design visit is where the options are worked out. Fitted cupboards are then made at our workshop and fitted on site.
If the job needs another trade, like an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Fitting day, step by step
When we arrive on fitting day, the first job is covering the floors and protecting the way in from the front door. Next, we carry in the sections built in our workshop. How long the fitting takes depends on the number of cupboards and the space they fit into, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. London parking ranges from controlled zones to driveways and private bays, so tell us what applies at the measuring visit. If you live in a flat, any lift or building rules are worth checking too.
- You tell us where the cupboards should go.
- We visit to measure up and go through the design.
- You receive a quote in writing covering the design, materials and finish.
- The cupboards are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a little extra left on edges that meet the walls.
- We fit the cupboards and trim the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
- The spray-painted or hand-painted finish completes the job, and new paintwork should be treated gently while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings
- Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
Arranging a design visit
We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
Advice
Is it time for fitted cupboards?
Moving into a flat often shows how little built-in storage there is. A tall cupboard in a hallway or a recess can make a real difference, especially when it uses the full height of the room.
If you recognise any of these, it is worth talking to us:
- Floor-to-ceiling storage in a flat
- Space for laundry, cleaning things and boots
- Cupboards that suit a period house
- A boiler cupboard that keeps access clear
If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St George, hallway recesses and alcoves are where fitted cupboards earn their keep.
What to check before you book
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- How they’ll get the furniture into the room
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- Will the quote be in writing?
Questions from Widmore
Do you make fitted cupboards for homes in Widmore?
Yes. Widmore is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can get in touch through our contact form with a few details.
Do you cover homes near Bickley station?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Can you hide my gas and electricity meters?
Yes. A cupboard can tidy them away without getting in the way of access. We do not move meters or fuse boards; that’s for your supplier or an electrician.
Do I choose the paint colour?
The choice is yours, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you’ve chosen.
How much does a fitted cupboard cost?
We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Each cupboard is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, use our contact form.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work.
Fitted cupboards in Widmore: local notes
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Widmore were built before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 25%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 4 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of the centre of Widmore. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. On TfL’s red routes, the rules on stopping and loading are strict. If your home is on or just off a main road, it is useful to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St George, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. The wider area includes historic houses such as Bromley Palace, about 1.1 miles west. For a period home anywhere nearby, an old boiler or airing cupboard can be rebuilt with proper shelves.
Widmore is about 3 miles south-east of Orpington, in the London Borough of Bromley. Widmore is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Widmore is one of 49 places on our list for Bromley.

We also cover the places around Widmore: Bickley (1 mile north), Elmstead (1 mile north), Chislehurst (1 mile north-east), Bromley (1 mile west) and Sundridge (1 mile north-west). Across the rest of Bromley, our area takes in Orpington (3 miles south-east), Beckenham (3 miles west), St Mary Cray (3 miles east), Penge (5 miles west), Anerley (5 miles west) and Crystal Palace (5 miles west).

What affects the cost of fitted cupboards
Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.
What to send when you contact us
A little information at the start saves time later. Where you can, include:
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Approximate measurements of the space
- The type of home and how the room is reached
- A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner
You do not need exact measurements to get started. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
What we do not do
Not everything around fitted cupboards is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or a Gas Safe registered engineer. Here is what to bear in mind:
- Changes to meters, which are for your supplier or an electrician
- Any gas work around the boiler
- Wiring for lights or sockets
Not sure whether your space suits fitted cupboards? You can use our contact form and we will tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.
