Fitted wardrobes in Spitalfields: what you get

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a room too narrow for hinged doors and bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes.

Stud walls in newer homes can carry pipes and cables, so we check before fixing into them. Many homes around Spitalfields date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Tall pieces are tied into the studs, not just the board.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Spitalfields

Is parking a problem for fitting in Spitalfields?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It is useful to tell us about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Spitalfields?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.

How long will the fitting take?

It depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. The making happens in our workshop, so the time in your home is mostly fitting and finishing.

Can a fitted wardrobe go against a cold wall?

Yes. We plan ventilation behind and inside wardrobes on external walls, in moisture-resistant MDF. Any existing damp needs dealing with before fitting.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

From workshop to your room

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a newer home, floors, walls and door frames are often freshly finished, so everything on the way in is covered before the sections arrive. Corners and door frames are covered as well. The sections are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

How to prepare

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s quick to buy.

Why bespoke in Spitalfields?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. That is a real advantage if you are renting or moving soon. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house. Separate ready-made pieces can make an open-plan room feel unplanned, while fitted furniture can give the space structure.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Spitalfields

  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Edges scribed to follow your walls

Take a look at bespoke vs off-the-shelf or how to compare quotes.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

Sharing a bedroom means sharing the wardrobe. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.

Here are some of the needs we’re asked about most:

  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • Mismatched bedroom furniture

Mansion House, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from

Spitalfields homes and fitted wardrobes

Homes built since 2000 make up about 45% of the housing in the area around Spitalfields, with about 19% built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Near the centre of Spitalfields, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Botolph (Grade I), under half a mile south, and Church of St Katherine Cree (Grade I), less than half a mile south-west. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. More than a third of the homes in the area around Spitalfields (about 45%) were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs.

If your home is one of the older houses near Christ Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. For families living near Makers Academy, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Converting a loft (we build storage in lofts that are already converted)
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Decorating or plastering the room

If in doubt, you can drop us a line using the contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.
