Caring for painted furniture

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • Choose a calm colour for the loft
  • Consider drawers for the deep, low spaces
  • Think about what will go in each cupboard or drawer
  • Tell us about parking during the design visit

Before we leave, we check every door and drawer with you. If there is an access door to the eaves, we make sure it opens fully. You’ll know it all works as it should.

Avoid overloading drawers so they keep running smoothly. A quick sort every so often helps. Heavy boxes are best kept low.

About our loft storage in Canning Town

The space behind the knee wall normally has insulation and ventilation to think about. Storage shouldn’t block the ventilation or squash the insulation. If anything looks wrong behind the eaves, it is worth asking whoever converted the loft. When we visit in Canning Town, we’ll see what’s there. Most enquiries start with wasted space behind the knee walls and a dormer that isn’t being used; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

A hall in a home built since 2000 is often compact, with several doors leading off it, which leaves little wall for storage. Around Canning Town, many homes were built since 2000, so that’s worth planning for. Even a shallow run can hold coats and shoes without crowding the doors.

If the job needs another trade, such as an electrician or a plumber, we will tell you. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Common questions about loft storage

Do you make loft storage for homes in Canning Town?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London, and Canning Town is part of that. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, and then we send a quote.

Do you cover homes near Custom House station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room.

How is loft storage priced?

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. The mix of cupboards, drawers and wardrobes, and the finish, all play a part. We set it all out in a written quote.

Do pictures help?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do you carry out loft conversions?

No. We do not carry out loft conversions. Our part is the storage once the loft is a finished room, from eaves cupboards to wardrobes under the slopes.

Canning Town homes and loft storage

Homes built since 2000 make up about 38% of the housing in the streets around Canning Town, with about 24% built between 1973 and 1999, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Canning Town, Historic England’s list includes Warehouse K (Grade II), less than half a mile south, and Warehouse W (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, such as fixing into original panelling. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. Purpose-built flats are home to about 54% of households in the streets around Canning Town, according to Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, the knee walls of a converted loft can take drawers as well as cupboards. For a flat near Custom House station, eaves cupboards are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Keir Hardie Park, living near green space often means muddy boots, bikes and outdoor kit, and eaves cupboards can give those things a place.

How fitting works for loft storage

Fitting day follows a set order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the eaves and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. On the day, floors are covered first and the sections brought in. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Any hand painting can be finished on site.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about your converted or boarded loft.
  2. We visit to measure the eaves and slopes and go through the design, including the headroom under the slope.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, finish and fitting days set out, for you to look over.
  4. Your storage is made in our workshop and painted to your chosen colour.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed to the slopes and the walls, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Before we arrive

  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we’re fitting to
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Getting a quote

Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, tell us about the room on our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.

Advice

Bespoke loft storage or ready-made?

A standalone wardrobe can go with you when you move. Fitted storage stays put, and it makes far more of the loft. Which suits you depends on your plans. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It can still go to the ceiling.

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.

Why work with us in Canning Town

  • We visit, measure and discuss the design before we quote
  • A spray or hand-painted finish
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight

Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made or what to look for in a quote.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

Honest limits

It’s useful to know what’s outside our work before you plan:

  • Altering the structure of the loft
  • Loft conversions, which we don’t carry out
  • Fixing damp or ventilation problems in the eaves
