About our fitted wardrobes in Friern Barnet

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. Typical reasons to get in touch are a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and space under the eaves going to waste, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Fitted furniture in a bedroom has to work with how you use the room. Whatever your home in Friern Barnet is like, the first question at the design visit is what the room needs to do. The layout, the doors and the inside follow from that. The finish is spray-painted or hand-painted, in a colour agreed with you.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish.

What happens on fitting day

You will not need to do much on the day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand makes the day easier, including anything on the walls near the work. Floors and doorways are protected before anything comes in. Sections are then carried in and assembled.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Before we arrive

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Looking after your furniture

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after. These habits help most:

  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
  • Let us know which walls face outside
  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed

Don’t pack clothes tight against the back panel. A little airflow helps keep damp at bay.

Keep any ventilation gaps clear. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Questions from Friern Barnet

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Friern Barnet?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

I live near New Southgate station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Barnet and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

It’s worked out with you when we measure, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Some shelves can be adjustable so the layout can change.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Is it possible to build wardrobes into a loft room with a slope?

Yes. Sloping ceilings are common in loft conversions and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully during the design visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

Bedrooms in Friern Barnet: local notes

In the streets around Friern Barnet, the largest groups of homes date from between 1973 and 1999 (about 28%) and before 1919 (about 27%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Friern Barnet include Church of St John the Evangelist (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west, and Garden House of Friern Hospital (Grade II), less than half a mile east. For a listed home, internal works that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for example removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Barnet sets its own rules. If your road in Friern Barnet falls in a zone, the van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Tell us what the parking is like at the design visit.

If you live near Friary Park, fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay. For families living near Holly Park Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Friern Barnet?

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Requests we hear often include:

  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom

If your home is one of the older houses near St John's Church, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Before you choose who makes it

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Let us know about it when you contact us.

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. Small marks are simple to touch up.

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat across wider sections.
