Southgate Fitted Wardrobes

In Southgate, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. We design your fitted wardrobe at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • A bedroom that never feels tidy

Fitted wardrobes in Southgate

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Southgate

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. We make fitted wardrobes from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the usual reasons to get in touch are standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and clothes with nowhere proper to go.

Around Southgate, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through.

Bedrooms in Southgate: local notes

Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 59% of the housing in the streets around Southgate, with about 16% built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Southgate, Historic England’s list includes Essex House and Arnoside House (Grade II*), less than half a mile south-east, and Avington Croft Cottage Holcombe House (Grade II), less than half a mile north-east. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Southgate is on or beside a main road, it is useful to mention that at the measuring visit. We’ll plan where the van can stop.

If your children go to Ashmole Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. For a flat near New Southgate station, it’s useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. If you live near Grovelands Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls.

Southgate is within the London Borough of Barnet, about 3 miles south-west of Finchley. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Southgate included. Our Barnet coverage includes Southgate and the places around it.

In N14, N11, N21 and N13, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. You’ll find streets here like High Street, Station Road and Blagden's Close, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Southgate is near the A111 and A1004, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Other places close to Southgate include Osidge (1 mile north-west), Brunswick Park (1 mile west), Arnos Grove (1 mile south), New Southgate (1 mile south) and Oakwood (1 mile north). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places like Finchley (3 miles south-west), Barnet (3 miles north-west), Burnt Oak (6 miles west), East Finchley (3 miles south-west), Hendon (5 miles south-west) and Whetstone (2 miles west).

When is bespoke worth it?

The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot typically do that in an older room.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can use the full height and width.

Boards, parts and paint

Birch plywood

Shelves inside a wardrobe carry folded clothes, shoes and boxes. Birch plywood keeps them flat.

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawer fronts can sit behind the doors or on the outside, depending on the look you prefer. Inside drawers keep the front simple.

What affects the price in Southgate

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. What affects it comes down to:

  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • How big the furniture is

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

What we need to know

There’s no need for exact sizes or plans. It’s enough to send:

  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and a written quote follows.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Southgate?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

What happens at the design visit?

We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do you work in Southgate?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, and that includes Southgate.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.

Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?

Yes. Wardrobes can sit either side of the bed with a bridge of cupboards above. It’s planned so there’s room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

How fitting day works

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. We visit to measure the room and go through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Before we arrive

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
