Fitted wardrobes in College Park

Questions from College Park

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Willesden Junction station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in College Park?

It can be: much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to let us know about parking at the design visit.

Does fitted furniture need planning permission?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so ask the council’s conservation officer.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the design visit.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. The wardrobe is shaped to the ceiling line, with long hanging where there’s height and shelves or drawers where it is lower. It makes good use of space that is hard to furnish.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in College Park

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. Where a wardrobe goes on an external wall, we plan ventilation behind and inside it to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the things people most often want solved are clothes with nowhere proper to go and not enough hanging space.

Around College Park, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Caring for painted furniture

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • List the things that will not hang, such as jumpers and shoes

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

Boards, parts and paint

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, so we use it for doors, end panels and the faces you see. It suits bedrooms where the wardrobe sits on an external wall.

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it is a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. You can paint the edge or leave the layers showing.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

It is worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture typically costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Where a period house has been split into flats, the way in often goes through shared parts, so it helps to let neighbours know about fitting day. Each section is sized for the tightest door or turn. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You let us know about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. We then arrange a design visit to measure and go through the design, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.

Advice

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in College Park

About 79% of the homes in the neighbourhood around College Park went up before 1919, and about 8% between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Part of College Park is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you’re not sure. More than half of the homes in the area around College Park (about 79%) were built before 1919, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Older bedrooms usually have alcoves and tall ceilings, both of which fitted wardrobes can use.

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as The Anglican Chapel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. For an older house near Saint Mark's, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Leighton House, about 2.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
