Fitted wardrobes in Walham Green

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. People typically come to us about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and an awkward slope in a loft bedroom, and the answer is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Walham Green, we plan the layout so the window opens fully and the light still comes in. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

An awkward room is another reason. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. Fitted wardrobes are shaped around them.

Some of the things we are asked to solve are these:

  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast
  • Too little room for clothes
  • Storage boxes stacked under the bed
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall

For an older house near Church of St John, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Before you hire any carpenter

  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. If your hall still has its original tiles or boards, they’re covered before any carrying starts. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Any decorating around the new pieces is for your decorator.

  1. You tell us about the room, including any slopes, alcoves or windows.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
  4. Once you’re happy, the wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

How to prepare

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Ask for a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and go through the design with you, and the written quote comes after. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.

Tips worth knowing

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
  • Tell us which walls face outside

Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising during the design visit.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A fitted wardrobe can be shaped to the ceiling line. Ready-made tall pieces have to be fixed to the wall for safety, and older walls of brick or lath and plaster make that harder than it looks. Fitted furniture is designed with the wall in mind.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. Doors, drawers, internal fittings and the finish make up most of the rest.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do you cover homes near Imperial Wharf station?

Yes. We cover all of Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with some details about the room.

How do you fit fitted wardrobes in a flat in Walham Green?

We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It is useful to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. We send a written quote after the design visit.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We talk through both during the design visit.

What finishes do you offer?

You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, and the written quote comes afterwards.
