Need fitted wardrobes in Kensal Rise?

Is bespoke worth it?

Bought wardrobes are made in set sizes, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so it leaves gaps at the wall, tilts on sloping floors or sits awkwardly against skirting and picture rails. Fitted pieces follow the wall and sit level.

Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It helps to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Kensal Rise

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while two rails, one over the other, suit shirts and jackets. We also think about who uses it, keeping rails at a height they can reach. Typical reasons to get in touch are too little room for clothes and space under the eaves going to waste; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Older London houses often have sash windows, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. For one of the older homes that make up a large share of the housing around Kensal Rise, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors on fitted pieces are hung to clear the bed and any radiator.

The quote comes in writing, so there’s time to read it properly and talk it over at home. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways along with the room itself, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Looking after your furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in

Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so tell us at the measuring visit if you need to store something heavy.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as we’ll have talked about during the design visit. After that, it’s over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so a clear area to work in near the room helps. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Where the finish is hand-painted, it can be done after the pieces are in.

  1. You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
  2. We come to measure and talk through hanging heights, doors and drawers, with your clothes in mind.
  3. A written quote follows.
  4. Once you are happy, the wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for spraying or for hand painting on site.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, ready to use.

Starting with a design visit

Flat-pack or bespoke?

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
