How we make fitted wardrobes for Hammersmith and Fulham

Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall where the space allows. There’s no dusty gap on top and no awkward space at the ends. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Hammersmith and Fulham, the first step is a design visit to measure up and go through the design. Most enquiries start with gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and no space in front for doors to swing, and the answer is made at our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
  2. We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
  3. The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.

Quotes in Hammersmith and Fulham

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

Homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and their bedrooms

We make fitted wardrobes for homes across Hammersmith and Fulham, in Fulham, Parsons Green and Walham Green and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whatever it’s made of.

In Hammersmith and Fulham, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 56%) and the years since 2000 (about 16%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. More than half of the homes in Hammersmith and Fulham (about 56%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths. About 26% of households in Hammersmith and Fulham live in flats in converted or shared houses, based on Census 2021. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the route in may go through a shared hall and stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.

Since August 2023, the Ultra Low Emission Zone has covered all of London, and red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping, so we plan access to your home in Hammersmith and Fulham ahead of fitting day.

Fulham: Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Near listed buildings like Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, less than half a mile north of the centre of Fulham, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Under a sloping ceiling, standard wardrobes leave most of the space unused. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it is tall and drawers or shelves where it’s low.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Real projects you can actually look at

Honest limits

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • Taking out a chimney breast to make space
  • Redecorating around the wardrobes

Caring for painted furniture

People planning fitted wardrobes often ask about these. They help before and after fitting:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day

Doors can settle a little once the wardrobes are filled. Hinges can normally be adjusted to line the doors up again, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.

Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust doors before a rub marks the paint.

When is bespoke worth it?

What you pay for with bespoke is mainly the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hammersmith and Fulham

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and discuss the design with you. We will also ask about access and parking.

Do you do plastering or decorating?

No. Plastering and decorating aren’t part of our work. We paint the furniture itself, by spray or by hand.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you’re in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

Will you travel outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.

What can go inside a fitted wardrobe?

The inside is planned around your clothes. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included. We talk it through during the design visit.

Which boards do you build with?

Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job best. Your quote sets out the materials.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician. We’ll design around them.
