About our fitted wardrobes in Hurlingham

Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. A tall section suits long coats and dresses, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We plan for the people using it too, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. If your home has standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Hurlingham are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How it’s made

Hand-painted finish

A hand-painted finish often suits wardrobes in older houses. You choose the colour.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF in a moisture-resistant grade is stable and paints evenly, which makes it ideal for wardrobe doors and visible panels. It’s a sensible choice against a colder external wall.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hurlingham

About 55% of the homes in the streets around Hurlingham went up before 1919, and about 26% since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. 6 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Hurlingham. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Purpose-built flats are home to about 46% of households in the neighbourhood around Hurlingham, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. For a flat, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Fulham Palace, about 0.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near Sulivan Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Fitting day, step by step

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully and leaving the room tidy. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. We send a quote in writing with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.

Preparing the room

  • Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Check the building’s rules for trades and lift bookings

Advice

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

I live near Imperial Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Hammersmith and Fulham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Hurlingham?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

How is the price worked out?

Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Sockets, switches and lighting are for your electrician, and some electrical work in homes is covered by Part P of the Building Regulations. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

Both work well, depending on the space. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We talk through both at the design visit.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It’s common, and it is allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls so the doors close neatly.

What we don’t do

We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:

  • Redecorating around the wardrobes
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician

If in doubt, you can use our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in Hurlingham

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.

A few of the things people ask us to solve include:

  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Empty alcoves in the bedroom
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • No space in front for doors to swing

If your home is one of the older houses near St Dionis, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.

Choosing a carpenter

  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight
  • A quote in writing that sets out the job
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
  • Where they’ll park and unload

Flats, conversions and lettings

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.

A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
