How we make fitted wardrobes for West Ealing

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and clothes pressed against a cold wall can lead to condensation. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. People typically come to us about wardrobes that are full to bursting and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around West Ealing are that old. That height can be used, with fitted furniture taken up to the cornice and top cupboards for occasional things. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish, and the workshop works from it.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day in an older house, the main job is scribing to walls and levelling on floors that slope, so each piece is trimmed and adjusted on site. We protect the floors and keep dust to a minimum. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, as terraced streets are often busy.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the bedroom, and we arrange a design visit.
  2. We come to measure the room, check the walls and ceiling and agree the layout. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
  3. We send a written quote for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
  4. Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements.
  5. We fit them in your home, levelled and scribed to the walls. A hand-painted finish, if you chose one, is done on site.

Before we arrive

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in West Ealing

I live near Hanwell station. Is that in your area?

Yes, homes across Ealing and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in West Ealing?

Yes, West Ealing is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Ealing and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls so the doors close neatly.

Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings and fitted storage suits them well. We measure the slope carefully at the measuring visit and scribe the wardrobe to it.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Bedrooms in West Ealing: local notes

In the streets around West Ealing, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and the years since 2000 (about 21%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of West Ealing include Church of St Mary (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north-west, and Church of St Mellitus (Grade II), under half a mile east. Where a home is listed, listed building consent can be needed for inside works that affect its character, like fixing into original panelling. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. More than half of the homes in the streets around West Ealing (about 53%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.

If your children go to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School or a school nearby, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. The wider area includes historic houses like Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.4 miles east. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If you live in a flat close to Hanwell station, it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

How it is made

Hanging rails

We place rails at the heights your clothes need: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, which gives large doors a smooth, even surface. It works on plain and panelled doors alike.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, which leaves gaps above and beside them. A fitted wardrobe runs to the ceiling and the walls. Tall standalone furniture needs fixing back to the wall so it can’t tip, and in an older house that can mean fixing into brick or lath and plaster. With fitted pieces, the fixings are planned for the wall from the start.

Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

What affects the price in West Ealing

Several things affect the price:

  • The overall size of the piece
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. A larger piece means more material and more time. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Helping us understand the room

The more you can tell us at the start, the better the design visit goes. When you contact us, it helps to send:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Examples of the look you are after

Rough measurements are fine at the start. We measure everything properly at the design visit, along with the walls, floor and ceiling. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form and tell us about the room. The written quote follows the visit.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
