Fitted wardrobes in Hanwell

How we make fitted wardrobes for Hanwell

Loft conversions, common in London terraces, often leave sloping ceilings. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that is hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If your home has condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, fitted wardrobes made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Sash windows are common in Victorian and Edwardian houses, and the window position and deep reveals affect where furniture can go. If your home is one of the many around Hanwell built before 1919, the layout lets the sash open fully and keeps the light unblocked. Doors are chosen and hung so they clear the bed, the radiator and the door to the room.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Hanwell

Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.

Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall
  • Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes

If you live near Drayton Green, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

What happens on fitting day

At the end, we tidy up and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a period home, the furniture is fitted to walls that aren’t straight, so there is some trimming and adjusting on site. Floors are protected, and dust is kept down as far as possible. Parking can be tight on terraced streets, so tell us about permits and bays during the design visit.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish, ready for you to read through.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop, in sections sized to get into your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room

Hanwell homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Hanwell were built before 1919 (about 53%) and since 2000 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. There are 11 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Hanwell. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Red routes, run by TfL, have strict rules on stopping and loading. If your home is on or just off a main road, it helps to mention it. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

Pitzhanger Manor, about 1.3 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. For families living near St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.

Hanwell is about 1 mile east of Ealing, in the London Borough of Ealing. Hanwell is part of the area we cover, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our Ealing coverage includes Hanwell.

We make fitted wardrobes across the W7, W13 and UB2 postcode area for fitted wardrobes. Streets in the area include Park Road, Green Lane and Felix Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Caring for painted furniture

Getting the most from fitted wardrobes starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:

  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Let us know about any damp you’ve seen on bedroom walls
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners.

Let doors close gently rather than slamming, and slide doors without forcing them. It keeps hinges and runners in adjustment longer.

Where other trades come in

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
  • Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

If in doubt, you can fill in our short enquiry form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers

Flats, leases and landlords

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it’s worth raising at the design visit.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hanwell?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so we can plan the day around it.

My house in Hanwell is Victorian. Can you deal with uneven walls?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

We make the wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home. That is why we measure the route, not just the room. In a leasehold flat, it is worth checking the lease first.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, like radiators or sockets.

Do you make the furniture yourselves?

We make it in our workshop. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.

Do you cover areas outside London?

No. We only take on work in London.
