Acton Fitted Wardrobes
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Acton starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- Too little room for clothes
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
Need fitted wardrobes in Acton?
Questions from Acton
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Acton?
Yes. Acton is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Ealing and London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.
How much will my fitted wardrobe cost?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a written quote after the design visit.
Can fitted wardrobes go either side of the bed?
Yes. Building around the bed uses a wall that often goes unused, with wardrobes at the sides and cupboards overhead. The bed size and room are measured when we visit.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you contact us, and we’ll see what we can do.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you.
About our fitted wardrobes in Acton
Fitted wardrobes are built to the room, from the floor to the ceiling and from wall to wall. There’s no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. For a bedroom in Acton, the first step is a design visit to measure up and talk through the design. If you’re living with a room too narrow for hinged doors and space under the eaves going to waste, fitted wardrobes made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.
Whether your home in Acton is a period house, an interwar semi, a post-war flat or a newer build, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Shelves, drawers and any hanging are arranged around your things.
The written quote is your record of the job. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Bedroom storage in Acton
Homes built before 1919 make up about 43% of the housing in the area around Acton, with about 28% built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of Acton, 7 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings. Flats in converted or shared houses account for about 21% of households in the streets around Acton, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it is worth checking yours first.
Gunnersbury Park, about 1.4 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. For a flat near Acton Central station, fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. Close to Ealing Common? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
Acton is within the London Borough of Ealing, about 2 miles west of Ealing. We cover Acton as part of our work across Ealing, and the process is the same everywhere we work. Our work takes in places right across Ealing.
Postcode districts we cover here for fitted wardrobes: W3, W4, NW10 and W12. Streets in the area include High Street, Church Road and Woodhurst Road, and homes on each of them are within our area for fitted wardrobes. Acton is near the B490 and A4000, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted wardrobes include Acton Vale (1 mile east), Acton Green (1 mile south), Bedford Park (1 mile south), Hanger Hill (1 mile north-west) and South Acton (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of Ealing, our area takes in Ealing (2 miles west), Southall (5 miles west), Greenford (4 miles north-west), Northolt (5 miles north-west), Northfields (2 miles west) and South Ealing (2 miles west). Acton is among the bigger places we cover in Ealing.

Looking after your furniture
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Tell us about the lift and stairs in your block
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be adjusted on their runners.
Now and then, check that handles and hinges are tight and adjust any door that starts to catch.
Flat-pack or bespoke?
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, and standard units leave gaps.
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: off-the-shelf furniture usually costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribe strips are trimmed on site to follow the walls and ceiling. It is how a straight carcass meets a wall that isn’t straight.
Birch plywood
Birch plywood is stiff and grips screws firmly, so it is a good choice for carcasses, shelves and drawer boxes. Its layered edge can be painted or left on show.
Flats, conversions and lettings
Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, finished by spray or by hand.

What happens on fitting day
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We measure the hall, stairs, doors and any lift not just the room, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route. We cover floors and doorways on the way in.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
Before we arrive
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
Getting a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
