Fitted wardrobes in Earl's Court: what you get

The inside matters as much as the doors. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. If you are living with a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and several odd pieces where one run of storage would do, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

Ceilings in homes built before 1919 are often tall, and a large share of homes around Earl's Court are that old. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Picture rails, skirting boards and coving are met neatly or cut around, so the furniture suits the house.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. Here are our suggestions:

  • Plan any socket or switch changes with your electrician before fitting
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Work out the split between long and short hanging
  • Check your lease before fixing furniture to walls in a leasehold flat

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that is barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.

Don’t dry washing inside a wardrobe or in the bedroom with the doors shut, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Earl's Court

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Earl's Court?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

Is Earl's Court in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London, and Earl's Court is part of that. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and discuss the design, followed by a quote.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes, with ventilation planned in. An outside wall is often colder than an inside one, so we allow for airflow behind and inside the wardrobe to help avoid condensation and mould.

Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?

You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. Long hanging, double hanging, shelves, drawers and shoe space can all be included, in the proportions you need. We talk it through at the measuring visit.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. Dust is kept down and cleared up as we go. Hand painting, if that’s your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. It starts when you let us know about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn. Tell us about parking as well, as a van normally needs a permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension in much of London.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route we measured.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Let us know about parking near your home
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

When is bespoke worth it?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Off-the-shelf furniture can be a sensible choice. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well, and it’s easy to buy.

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?

Standalone wardrobes cost less to buy and can come with you when you move. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house and are made for that room alone. Chimney breasts in older houses stand out by different amounts, so the recesses either side are rarely the same, which means a matching pair of ready-made units seldom fits both. Fitted furniture is made to each one separately.

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because the size, the layout and the finish all vary. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You will see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.

What prompts fitted wardrobes in Earl's Court

A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Storage built into the slope uses space that would otherwise go to waste, leaving the floor open.

A few of the things people ask us to solve are these:

  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • A tight bedroom where doors get in the way
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

If you live near Gwendwr Garden, keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Real projects you can actually look at
  • Will the doors close with even gaps?
