Fitted wardrobes in World's End

Fitted wardrobes in World's End

Fitted wardrobes are made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet. We make fitted wardrobes from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall.

A large share of the homes around World's End were built before 1919, and in a Victorian or Edwardian bedroom, the chimney breast and its alcoves often shape the room. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Because older floors slope and walls bow, everything is scribed and levelled on site.

The furniture is built in our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

If your children go to Ashburnham Community School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a flat close to Imperial Wharf station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it. For an older house near St John's Church Centre, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before and after fitting day

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Let us know about the lift and stairs in your block
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Empty the area where we will be working
  • Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Avoid drying clothes in the bedroom where you can, as the extra moisture can lead to condensation. Opening a window now and then helps.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so the furniture comes in sections sized for the route in. Floors and stair carpets are protected on the way in and out, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
  2. At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
  3. You receive a written quote for the wardrobes.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.

How to prepare

  • Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Take anything hanging off the wall we are fitting to

Starting with a design visit

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in World's End

I live near Imperial Wharf station. Is that in your area?

Yes. We cover all of Kensington and Chelsea and the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

My home in World's End is a period house with walls that aren’t straight. Is that a problem?

Yes, that’s normal in older houses: each piece is scribed to the wall and levelled at the base. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it is useful to be around at the end.

Who chooses the colour?

The choice is yours, and it is agreed with you before painting. Whichever finish you pick, it’s in the colour you have chosen.

How do you get fitted wardrobes into a flat?

We plan the sections around the route into your flat. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

We plan it with you at the design visit, based on what you wear and how much of it there is. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Bought wardrobes come in the maker’s finishes. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop, since there is a design visit, a quote and workshop time first. The two recesses beside a chimney breast are seldom an identical size, and standard units bought as a pair rarely suit both. Each side can be made to its own size.

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, written once we have measured up.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check during the design visit.
