Questions we’re often asked
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Elmstead?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Elmstead?
Yes, we work across Bromley, Elmstead included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can tell us about the room on our contact form with some details.
What if my bedroom floor isn’t level?
Uneven floors are normal in older homes. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.
How do I get started?
Just use our contact form. It is useful to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design.
Do I get to choose the colour?
The choice is yours. Whichever finish you pick, it is in the colour you have chosen.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need access, so someone has to let us in. You do not need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Elmstead
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, and a wardrobe packed against one can trap moist air. We allow for ventilation behind and within wardrobes on external walls to help avoid condensation and mould. Moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice there too. If you’re living with gaps above and around standalone wardrobes and wasted space beside the chimney breast, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
The front bedroom in many 1920s and 1930s houses sits above a bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Around Elmstead, a big part of the housing is interwar, semi-detached or detached, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
The written quote puts the design visit in writing: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it is easier before the furniture is made.

What happens on fitting day
When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and lift the floor protection. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Interwar houses typically have a straight run of stairs and a reasonable hallway, though we still measure the route in not just the room. Fitted wardrobes arrive in sections and are assembled in place, with floors protected throughout.
- You get in touch and let us know what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- A written quote follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Getting ready for fitting day
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
Advice
Materials and finishes
Plinths and scribe strips
Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It is what makes the wardrobe look built in.
Hanging rails
A long rail needs a support in the middle to carry a full load. We plan the rail lengths with that in mind.
Flats, conversions and lettings
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.
For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. Red routes are run by TfL and have strict stopping rules, so it is worth raising at the design visit.
What we do not do
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Treating damp or mould on the walls
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Taking out a chimney breast to make space
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

Near listed buildings like Elm Bank, under half a mile south-east of the centre of Elmstead, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. What affects the price in Elmstead
What you pay depends on:
- The overall size of the piece
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
- The number of doors and drawers
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, with the materials and finish set out. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.
What to send when you contact us
Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
To get a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form and tell us which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
