Fitted wardrobes designed for your room
Fitted wardrobes for homes in Sundridge
In a period bedroom, the alcoves beside the chimney breast make natural wardrobe spaces. Wardrobes in both alcoves leave the chimney breast on show, scribed to follow the uneven walls. Picture rails and cornices can be met neatly or cut around. Most enquiries start with musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and empty alcoves in the bedroom, and the answer is built in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Wherever your home in Sundridge sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. On an external wall, ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps keep condensation away. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Before and after fitting day
Most of what helps is simple. What we’d suggest:
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
- Mention if the wardrobe will go on an external wall
- Think about whether hinged doors will clear the bed
Fill the rails gradually and spread the weight along them instead of crowding one section. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.
Close doors gently and do not let them swing into furniture, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
Honest limits
Before you plan the job, it is useful to know what we do not do:
- Electrical work, like moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
Moving home often prompts it. Standalone wardrobes from a previous home may not fit the new bedroom. Built-in wardrobes are planned for the room you live in now.
Requests we hear often include:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go
- Empty alcoves in the bedroom
For a family home near St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, the inside of fitted wardrobes can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow.
Before you choose who makes it
- Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
- Real projects you can actually look at
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Flats, leases and landlords
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the measuring visit.
Sundridge homes and fitted wardrobes
In the neighbourhood around Sundridge, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. 3 conservation areas have at least part of their area within a mile of central Sundridge. Historic England says England has around 10,000, and the controls mainly cover the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. The share of homes built before 1919 around Sundridge, about 33%, is well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Quernmore Secondary School, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. Close to Elmstead Wood? Keeping fitted wardrobes off the window wall keeps the room bright.

Questions we are often asked
I live near Sundridge Park station. Is that in your area?
Yes, homes across Bromley and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does a conservation area in or near Sundridge affect fitted furniture?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What happens at the design visit?
We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. We’ll also ask about access and parking.
Can I send photos ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?
The space in front of the wardrobe usually decides it. Where a bed sits close by, sliding doors often work better, while hinged doors suit rooms with space to open them. We look at it with you when we measure.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you before anything is painted.
How fitting day works
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Fitting day means joining the sections, fitting them to the walls and setting them level. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturdays can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us about the room.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a quote in writing.
