Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the streets around Widmore, with about 25% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. There are 14 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Widmore. You can check whether a particular building is listed on Historic England’s list. Around Widmore, about 33% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Bromley as a whole, about 17%, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. So older-house details are more likely to come into the design of fitted wardrobes.

Bromley Palace, about 1.1 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. Near listed buildings like Church of St George, under half a mile north-east of the centre of Widmore, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Widmore

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. If you’re living with dusty space on top of the wardrobe and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

Wherever your home in Widmore sits in London’s mix of housing, the furniture starts from your room, not a standard size. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. The inside layout is planned around what you actually store.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. On fitting day, the sections are assembled, scribed to the walls and levelled. The fixings suit whatever the walls are made of. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

  1. It starts when you tell us about the room, the floor it’s on and the wardrobes you want.
  2. We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
  3. A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
  5. Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Getting a quote

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so each section is sized to get through without a struggle.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Widmore?

Yes. Widmore is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Bromley and London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details.

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Widmore?

It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor permit, a pay-and-display bay or a suspended bay, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.

Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?

The wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors. We measure the stairs, landings and lift as well as the bedroom. If you are in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to walls.

How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?

It is worked out with you when we measure, starting from the clothes you have. Adjustable shelves keep some flexibility for later.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you.

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

It’s worth being clear about where our work stops:

  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can fill in our short enquiry form and we will tell you. How it works.

Materials and parts

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Birch plywood
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Hinged or sliding doors

Caring for painted furniture

These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Check the route into your flat, not just the room
  • Tell us which walls face outside
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Check how much space there is in front for doors to open

New paintwork is dry to the touch long before it has fully cured. For the first while, open and close the doors gently.

Make sure vents at the top or bottom of the wardrobe are not blocked, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Widmore?

Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces and keeps everything out of sight.

Typical reasons people contact us include:

  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms
  • Wardrobes that are full to bursting

Close to Jubilee Country Park? Fitted wardrobes are normally planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

What to check before you book

  • Whether the finish is set out in the quote
  • Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
  • Are the boards named, like MDF or plywood?
  • How they’ll get the furniture into the room
