Fitted wardrobes in Collier Row: what you get
Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and the usual reasons to get in touch are empty alcoves in the bedroom and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.
In a 1930s semi, the main bedroom often sits over the front room and its bay, which leaves the side walls for storage and the bay for light. Interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a big part of the housing around Collier Row, so that shape of room is worth knowing. We measure every wall, even where the room looks square.
Where other trades are needed, for instance an electrician to move a socket, we point that out, so it can be arranged before fitting day. Our quote covers the carpentry: the design, the materials and the finish.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes come in standard heights and widths, so there is typically a gap on top and at the ends. A fitted wardrobe fills the space wall to wall and up to the ceiling. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, so ready-made furniture often ends up in the wrong place. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
Why choose us
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
- More than 300 projects completed
- Built in our workshop and fitted in your home
Take a look at how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.
Fitting day, step by step
There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. In a 1920s or 1930s house, the hall and stairs are usually straightforward, but the route in is still measured, not just the room. The furniture comes in sections and is put together where it is going.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
- Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
- We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
- Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.
How to prepare
- Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
- Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
Arranging a design visit
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form. We’ll then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Advice
When is bespoke worth it?
It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is tricky, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bedroom storage in Collier Row
In the area around Collier Row, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 59%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 33%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Collier Row include Numbers 215 (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling may need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. About 33% of homes in the streets around Collier Row were built between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Bedrooms from that era tend to be regular, so fitted furniture can run wall to wall, fixed to suit the wall.

Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Fixing the cause of condensation or damp
- Electrical work, such as moving sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room. Our process from visit to fitting.

- Hand-painted finish

- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
Flats, conversions and lettings
In a managed block, the building manager or concierge may need notice before we arrive. Lifts sometimes need to be booked, and the lift size helps decide how big each section can be. Tell us about it when you contact us.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of.
Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Collier Row
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Collier Row?
Yes, we work across Havering, Collier Row included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with some details.
Do you cover homes near Romford station?
Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?
Floors in older houses are often out of level. The wardrobes are levelled on adjustable feet or a plinth and the doors line up.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Inside a house, fitted furniture doesn’t normally need planning permission. If the building is listed, works affecting its character can require listed building consent.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space. To send them, drop us a line using the contact form.
