Rail heights are set for the clothes they hold. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. Most enquiries start with mismatched bedroom furniture and damp or musty clothes against an external wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.
With interwar houses or semis a big part of the housing around Romford, bedrooms usually have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that is spray painting or hand painting.

Bedroom storage in Romford
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Romford were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 32%) and since 2000 (about 30%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. The National Heritage List records 10 entries within half a mile of the centre of Romford. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Purpose-built flats are more common around Romford than across Havering: about 42% of households, against about 20%, according to Census 2021. So the route in, from stairs to lifts, is part of the design.
Hare Hall, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If you live in a period home close to Parish Church of St Edward the Confessor, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice.
Romford is in the London Borough of Havering. Anywhere in Romford, the process is the same: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Romford is one of the places in Havering where we make fitted wardrobes, and the borough has 22 places on our list.
Every home in RM1, RM7, RM11 and RM2 is within our area for fitted wardrobes. Our area takes in homes on streets like High Street, Market Place and Market Link, whether you want fitted wardrobes or another piece made for the room. Romford sits close to the A1251, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. If you’re just outside Romford, we also cover Rush Green (1 mile south-west), Collier Row (1 mile north), Rise Park (1 mile north), Becontree Heath (1 mile south-west) and Chadwell Heath (2 miles west). We also make fitted wardrobes in nearby places such as Hornchurch (2 miles south-east), Gallows Corner (2 miles north-east), Elm Park (2 miles south), Rainham (4 miles south), Upminster (3 miles east) and Ardleigh Green (2 miles east). Romford is one of the larger places we cover in Havering.

Green spaces nearby include The Chase Nature Reserve.

Practical tips
Fresh paintwork takes a while to cure fully, so go gently with it for a while. Beyond that, these tips help:
- Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
- Empty the area where we will be working
- Let us know about any damp you have seen on bedroom walls
- Check the route into your flat, not just the room
Once clothes go in and the wardrobes are in daily use, doors may settle slightly. Most hinges can be adjusted to bring a door back in line, and sliding doors can be reset on their track.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, especially where the wardrobe meets an outside wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
What prompts fitted wardrobes in Romford
Some bedrooms are hard to furnish. A sloping ceiling, a chimney breast, a low window or a door in the wrong place can defeat standard furniture. We shape fitted wardrobes around those features.
Requests we hear often include:
- Standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
For a flat near Romford station, the route in is measured along with the room itself, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Choosing a carpenter
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Can you see real work of theirs?
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Will the quote be in writing?
How we price fitted wardrobes
To work out the quote, we look at:
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
- Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, talk through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To start, send us a few details through our contact form.
Getting in touch
To give us a picture of the room, it helps to include:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- What you’d like to store or use the space for
The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and go through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit. To arrange the visit, message us from the contact page.
Flats, conversions and lettings
For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or awkward room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Romford?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit.
I live near Romford station. Is that in your area?
Yes. We cover all of Havering and the rest of London. You can send us a few details through our contact form to arrange a design visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it, along with access and parking. The price comes in a quote in writing after the design visit.
Can I choose the layout inside the wardrobe?
The inside is planned around your clothes. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We talk it through during the design visit.
Fitting day, step by step
Getting everything level comes first. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design, and we measure the stairs, landings and doorways too.
- A written quote follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- Fitting day: the sections come in, are joined and set level, and the doors are hung.
Before fitting day
- Keep pets in another room while we work
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Arranging a design visit
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To book a design visit, send us a few details through our contact form.
