Ardleigh Green Fitted Wardrobes
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Ardleigh Green starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.
- A room too narrow for hinged doors
- Not enough hanging space
- Clothes with nowhere proper to go

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Ardleigh Green
A fitted wardrobe is built into the room itself, running floor to ceiling and wall to wall. There is no dusty gap on top and no tricky space at the ends. If you’re planning fitted wardrobes in Ardleigh Green, we start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall and wasted space beside the chimney breast.
In an area where interwar homes or semis make up much of the housing, as around Ardleigh Green, bedrooms typically have regular walls, a window on one side and sometimes a chimney breast. That makes a full wall of fitted furniture simple to plan, laid out around what you store. Where a loft conversion has been added, the sloping ceiling can take storage too.
A quote in writing follows the design visit. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Flats, leases and landlords
Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check at the design visit.
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and that happens on fitting day. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so we scribe the edges by hand to follow the wall. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- At the design visit we measure the room and plan the inside: long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers.
- The written quote sets out each wardrobe’s inside layout, the doors, the materials and the finish.
- The wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, ready for the rails, shelves and drawers you chose.
- We fit the wardrobes in your home, then put in the rails, shelves and drawers at the heights we agreed.
Preparing the room
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
Getting a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Advice
Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Older homes rarely have straight walls or level floors. A standalone wardrobe can lean, rock or show tapering gaps. Ours are levelled on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, and standalone units can lean or gap. Fitted furniture is scribed and levelled on site.
In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. Tell us about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

FAQs: fitted wardrobes in Ardleigh Green
Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Ardleigh Green?
Yes, we work across Havering, Ardleigh Green included, and across the rest of London. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details.
Is parking a problem for fitting in Ardleigh Green?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. We plan it so the bed fits comfortably and the room still feels open.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
Someone needs to be there to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, but it helps to be around at the end.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. Tell us when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
Where other trades come in
We’re carpenters, so some jobs belong to other trades. These are worth knowing before you plan:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- Structural changes to the room
- Building work to create a loft room
If in doubt, you can send us a few details through our contact form and describe the room. How it works.

Practical tips
New paint needs time to cure fully, so treat it gently at first. After that, a few simple habits help:
- Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- Let us know which walls face outside
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
Painted doors feel dry quickly but take longer to cure fully. For the first while, open and close the doors gently and do not scrub the surfaces.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Look out for a musty smell or spots on clothes and have the cause looked at early.
Fitted wardrobes in Ardleigh Green: local notes
About 46% of the homes in the streets around Ardleigh Green went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 29% between 1945 and 1972, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Near the centre of Ardleigh Green, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Liberty School (Grade II*), less than half a mile north-west. Works inside a listed home that affect its character, for instance removing original joinery or fixing into it, may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Havering sets its own rules. Where a street in Ardleigh Green is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It helps to let us know about parking during the design visit.
If you live in a flat close to Gidea Park station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room. If your home is one of the older houses near All Saints, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. If your children go to Ardleigh Green Junior School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
