Bespoke kitchens in Kensal Rise

How we make bespoke kitchens for Kensal Rise

We often use moisture-resistant MDF in kitchens, because it copes with a room that gets steamy. For drawer boxes and shelves, birch plywood is a good choice. Cabinets are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colours you choose. We make kitchens from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the things people most often want solved are a kitchen finished in your colours and a kitchen that fits an uneven room.

Wall cabinets need firm fixings, and older internal walls can be lath and plaster rather than brick. Since a large share of homes around Kensal Rise are that old, each wall is checked before deciding where heavy cabinets go. Where a wall won’t carry the weight, open shelves or tall floor-standing cupboards can take over.

Everything we agree at the measuring visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If you’d like to change anything, it’s easier before the furniture is made.

Before and after fitting day

The finish lasts best with a little care, whether it was spray painted or hand painted. These practical tips help:

  • Share the layout with your other trades
  • Mention any parking or lift rules
  • Check stairs, hallways and lifts for access
  • Make sure walls are dry before cabinets go in

The appliances you’ve chosen come with their own care instructions, and the worktop you chose will have its own care advice too.

Choose your appliances before the design is finalised. We size the spaces around them, and changing them later can mean changing the units.

How fitting day works

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Original hallway tiles and old floorboards are worth protecting, so they’re covered before anything comes in. Drilling into lath and plaster is done with care, so the plaster around stays sound. Decorating around the furniture afterwards is for your decorator.

  1. We start with how you cook and what the kitchen needs to hold.
  2. We visit to measure and go through the design and storage.
  3. We send a written quote setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
  4. The cabinets, doors and drawer fronts are built in our workshop.
  5. We fit the cabinets in your home; plumbing, gas and electrics are done by your plumber, a Gas Safe engineer and your electrician.

How to prepare

  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Starting with a design visit

Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To get started, message us from the contact page and tell us about the room. You receive a quote in writing after the visit.

How we price bespoke kitchens

Every room is different, so every job is quoted on its own. These are the things that affect it:

  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

We quote once we have seen the room. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and talk through the design with you, then send a written quote. The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Made-to-measure kitchens in Kensal Rise

In the neighbourhood around Kensal Rise, the largest groups of homes date from before 1919 (about 53%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 13%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Part of Kensal Rise is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house does not normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. About 25% of households in the area around Kensal Rise live in flats in converted or shared houses, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. Conversions often leave rooms in unusual shapes, with partition walls, boxed-in pipes and chimney breasts in odd places, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

If your children go to Ark Franklin Primary Academy or a school nearby, a kitchen with a spot for school letters and lunch boxes makes mornings easier. For an older house near Church of St John the Evangelist, a narrow back addition or an old chimney breast may shape the kitchen layout. Close to Queen’s Park? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors and drawer fronts can be flat, framed or panelled and paint them to your choice.

Birch plywood

We use birch plywood where strength matters, which matters in drawers and shelves that carry weight. Its layered edge can be shown or painted.

Questions we’re often asked

My home in Kensal Rise is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Kitchens are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it’s worth checking those early.

Can you fit bespoke kitchens to the uneven walls of an older house in Kensal Rise?

Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Older walls can be solid brick or lath and plaster, and the fixings are chosen to suit.

How long does fitting take?

It depends on the kitchen. How long fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote, so you can plan your other trades around it.

Is there room for an island in my kitchen?

If the room is big enough, yes. We measure during the design visit to check there’s room to walk round it and open doors. If it would crowd the kitchen, we will say so.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We don’t treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you work on Saturdays?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
