How we make fitted wardrobes for Cricklewood

Fitted wardrobes are built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Doors and panels are spray painted in the workshop or hand painted, in the colour you choose. Then we fit them in your home, levelling them on a plinth or adjustable feet and scribing them to the walls and ceiling. If you’re living with a tight bedroom where doors get in the way and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, fitted wardrobes made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish can solve it.

Older bedrooms normally have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around Cricklewood date from then. Fitted furniture can run right up to the ceiling or the cornice, with high storage for the things you use least. Original mouldings are worked around rather than removed, so the furniture suits the house.

Everything we agree during the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout, what goes inside, the materials used and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How we price fitted wardrobes

The price for your room depends on:

  • Tricky walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
  • The width and height of the space
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Spray painting or hand painting

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, use our contact form.

What we need to know

When you contact us, these help most:

  • Where you live, with the postcode
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • What the furniture needs to hold
  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, when we have measured up and talked through the design. For a quote, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Flats, conversions and lettings

If your building is on a red route or a busy main road, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind.

Questions from Cricklewood

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Cricklewood in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes. Cricklewood is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. You can use our contact form to arrange a design visit.

How do I get a quote?

Just fill in our short enquiry form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few photos, and we will arrange a design visit, followed by a quote in writing.

Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?

It is common, and it’s allowed for. The wardrobe is set level with a plinth or adjustable feet and scribed to the walls.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. We will talk you through what to expect beforehand.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

Materials and finishes

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat covers edges, corners and panels evenly for a smooth finish. The colour is agreed at the design stage.

Moisture-resistant MDF

Wardrobe doors are large, so stability matters. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well, for plain or panelled doors alike.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Hallways in period houses are often narrow, and the stairs turn sharply, so fitted wardrobes are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through.

  1. You contact us with some details about the room and the wardrobes you’d like.
  2. At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Tell us about parking near your home
  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand

Getting a quote

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, fill in our short enquiry form.

Advice

Bedrooms in Cricklewood: local notes

About 63% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Cricklewood went up before 1919, and about 12% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. Cricklewood is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. More than half of the homes in the streets around Cricklewood (about 63%) were built before 1919, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast and alcoves, which suit wardrobes built to their widths.

If your children go to Anson Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live in a flat close to Cricklewood station, the route in is measured not just the room, and the sections are sized to fit it. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Church of St Gabriel, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.
