Fitted Wardrobes in Locksbottom

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted wardrobes in Locksbottom starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
  • Too little room for clothes

Ask about fitted wardrobes in Locksbottom

Is it time for fitted wardrobes?

The usual reason is simple: there isn’t enough storage. Clothes end up on chairs, in boxes under the bed or in another room. A fitted wardrobe uses the full height of the wall, which adds a lot of space without taking more floor.

If any of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting in touch:

  • Space under the eaves going to waste
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

For a family home near Darrick Wood Infant & Nursery School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How they deal with uneven walls and floors
  • Will they visit to measure before quoting?
  • How parking will work on your street

Choosing a carpenter in London: a checklist

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Locksbottom

You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Around Locksbottom, interwar houses or semi-detached and detached homes make up a good part of the housing. Many 1930s houses have a small box room over the stairs, often with a raised bulkhead in the floor, and the bulkhead is built around rather than ignored. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.

Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made at our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Flats, conversions and lettings

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. We choose fixings to suit the wall, which we check during the design visit.

Materials and finishes

Doors and drawer fronts

Drawers can be hidden behind doors or shown as part of the front, depending on the look you prefer. Internal drawers keep a clean run of doors.

Hand-painted finish

With hand painting, you see the colour in your own room’s light before the final coat. Scribed edges and joins are painted along with the rest.

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Locksbottom

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Locksbottom were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 40%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 27%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Within a mile of the centre of Locksbottom, 3 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. All of London, Bromley included, is inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Locksbottom. How the van gets to your door is planned at the design visit.

For an older house near St Paul, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go. Living in a block of flats near Orpington station? Then each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

How fitting works for fitted wardrobes

You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. Most of the decisions were made at the design visit and set out in your quote, so the day itself is about careful fitting and leaving everything tidy. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days. It helps to clear the room and the route before we arrive. Fitting day starts with protecting the floors and setting out the pieces. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.

  1. You get in touch and tell us about the room.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit them in your home, scribed to the walls and ceiling; a hand-painted finish is done on site.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through

Questions from Locksbottom

Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Locksbottom?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Orpington station?

Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It is useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Can fitted wardrobes follow a sloping ceiling?

Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings and fitted storage suits them well. The slope is measured at the measuring visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.

Can you build wardrobes around a bed?

Yes. A common layout is tall cupboards either side of the bed and storage above the headboard. It’s planned so there is room around the bed and the room doesn’t feel enclosed.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We’ll design around them.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

To be fair, modular wardrobe systems are easy to reconfigure. A bespoke interior is planned around what you own. Ready-made units come in standard depths that rarely suit every space, which may be too deep for one spot and too shallow for another. With fitted furniture, the depth is chosen for the room.

Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, which the quote allows for. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured.
