Fitted wardrobes in Petts Wood
Doors can be hinged or sliding. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. Typical reasons to get in touch are dusty space on top of the wardrobe and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.
Around Petts Wood, with interwar houses or semis making up much of the housing, the spare room may be the small one at the front, over the hall and stairs. Small rooms like that suit fitted wardrobes, whether the room is a guest room, a dressing room or a study. Nothing is assumed: the room is measured wall by wall.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we’ve talked through, the materials and the finish.

Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Look at how many long coats and dresses you have
- Clear the wall where the wardrobes will go before fitting day
- Have sockets moved before the wardrobes go in
- Think about where you will keep shoes, bags and folded clothes
Hang clothes evenly along each rail rather than packing one end. Heavy coats are best on a short rail or near a support, so the rail stays straight.
Keep any ventilation gaps clear, particularly on an external wall. Watch for musty smells or marks on clothes.

What else we make in Petts Wood
Petts Wood homes and fitted wardrobes
In the streets around Petts Wood, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 71%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 21%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Petts Wood, Historic England’s list includes The Daylight Inn (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Crofton Farmhouse (Grade II), about 0.6 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. The council’s conservation officer is the person to ask before work starts. TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules. Where a home in Petts Wood is on or beside a main road, it helps to mention that during the design visit. We can then plan where the van will stop.
Bromley Palace, about 2.6 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. If you live near Jubilee Country Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t normally do that in an older room.
Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. In a room with square walls and standard sizes, it can work well.
What fitted wardrobes cannot fix
We do not treat damp or carry out building work, so these points are worth knowing:
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations

Fitting day, step by step
In older rooms, the furniture normally has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Clearing the room and the way in beforehand helps the day run well. On the day, we cover the floors first, then bring the sections in. Each piece is levelled, scribed where the wall wanders and fixed to suit the wall.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom.
- At the design visit, we measure the room, check the walls, floor and ceiling and plan the doors and inside with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish, ready for you to read through.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
- We fit them in your home, scribe them to the walls and hang the doors. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
How to prepare
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
- Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
- Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
Ask for a quote
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Related advice
Is it time for fitted wardrobes?
A finished loft conversion often leaves a new bedroom with sloping walls and no storage. Wardrobes built under the slope use space that would otherwise sit empty, leaving the floor open.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- A sloping ceiling that’s hard to use
- No space in front for doors to swing
- Standard wardrobes that do not fill the wall

Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Do you cover homes near Petts Wood station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Petts Wood?
Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We’ll also ask about access and parking, and a written quote follows.
Can you fit wardrobes in a top-floor flat?
We plan the sections around the route into your flat, then assembled in the bedroom. Let us know about any concierge or lift booking rules.
Can fitted wardrobes go on an external wall?
Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.
Do you work on Saturdays?
Yes, by arrangement. Let us know when you get in touch if a Saturday suits you best.
