How we make fitted wardrobes for Southborough
Rooms under a slope are common in loft conversions and top-floor rooms. A fitted wardrobe can follow the slope, with long hanging at the tall end and shelves or drawers where it gets lower. Space that’s hard to use otherwise becomes useful storage. If you’re living with a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use and condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.
A good part of the housing around Southborough is interwar, semi-detached or detached. If yours is a 1920s or 1930s house, the box room over the stairs is a classic spot for fitted furniture. Main bedrooms from that era are often a good size, with a bay window at the front.
A written quote is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the fitted wardrobe we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Southborough
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Southborough?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It helps to tell us about parking at the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.
Do you cover homes near Bickley station?
Yes. We cover all of Bromley and the rest of London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with some details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.
Does someone need to be home during the fitting?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
Do I choose the paint colour?
You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.
Should I choose hinged or sliding wardrobe doors?
It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing, while sliding doors save space but only open part of the wardrobe at a time. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.
Can wardrobes be fitted on an uneven floor?
We allow for it from the start. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.
The problems fitted wardrobes solve
Couples often want storage that works for two. A fitted wardrobe can be planned with separate sections, each with the rails, shelves and drawers its owner needs.
Here’s what fitted wardrobes can help with:
- An tricky slope in a loft bedroom
- Storage boxes stacked under the bed
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- No space in front for doors to swing
If you live near Jubilee Country Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.
Choosing a carpenter
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Do they scribe the furniture to the walls?
- How parking will work on your street
Is bespoke worth it?
With off-the-shelf wardrobes, the colour choice is the maker’s. Fitted wardrobes are painted in a colour agreed with you, sprayed in the workshop or painted by hand. Bespoke work does take longer than buying from a shop. The spaces between doors, windows and radiators are seldom a stock size, which leaves ready-made pieces sitting awkwardly. Built-in pieces are planned around those fixed points.
The finish affects the cost: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitting day, step by step
Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Semis and detached houses often have a front path or a side gate, which can make carrying in easier. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors are covered from the door to the room, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You get in touch with a few details about the bedroom and where it is in the house.
- At the design visit we plan the wardrobes with you and check the route in, including any lift or tight stair turn.
- A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
- In our workshop the wardrobes are built in sections from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, so each piece fits through the doors and round the landings.
- We carry the sections up, join them in the room and scribe them to the walls and ceiling.
Before fitting day
- Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area
How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To start, get in touch through our contact form.

Flats, leases and landlords
If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. Some leases need the building owner’s consent for alterations. We cannot advise on your lease.
Conversions and newer flats often have stud walls rather than solid brick. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, after checking the walls during the design visit.

What else we make in Southborough
Southborough homes and fitted wardrobes
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 35% of the housing in the area around Southborough, with about 23% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Southborough include Turpington Farmhouse (Grade II), less than half a mile south-west, and The Chequers Public House (Grade II), less than half a mile east. Listing covers the inside of a building as well as the outside, so works that affect a listed home’s character, like removing original joinery, can need listed building consent. Check with the council’s conservation officer first. About 49% of households in the streets around Southborough live in detached or semi-detached houses, the 2021 Census shows. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
If your children go to Southborough Primary School or a school nearby, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Living in a block of flats near Bickley station? Then check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.
