Practical tips
These points come up often when people plan fitted wardrobes. They help before and after fitting:
- Check how much space there is in front for doors to open
- Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
- Work out the split between long and short hanging
- For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough to clean painted doors. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, as they can dull the paint.
Close doors gently and don’t let them swing into furniture, and slide doors without forcing them. It helps the hinges and runners stay true.
About our fitted wardrobes in Notting Hill
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. People typically come to us about condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall and not enough hanging space; the furniture is made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
Around Notting Hill, a large share of homes date from before 1919, and bedrooms in houses of that age often have a chimney breast with an alcove either side. Fitted furniture can fill the alcoves, wrap round the chimney breast or run across a whole wall. Walls and floors in older houses are rarely true, so the pieces are scribed to the wall and levelled at the base.
Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. You will see what will be made, the boards used and the finish.

Where other trades come in
It is worth being clear about where our work stops:
- Removing walls, chimney breasts or any structural work
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
- Building work to create a loft room
Not sure whether your space suits fitted wardrobes? You can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.
What goes into it
- Hinged or sliding doors
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Birch plywood
- Spray-painted finish
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Hand-painted finish
From workshop to your room
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. The time the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Terraced streets in London are often lined with parked cars, so it helps to tell us at the design visit what’s outside. The van is unloaded quickly, with the sections carried straight in. Saturday fitting can be arranged.
- You get in touch and tell us what you keep in your wardrobes now.
- We visit to measure up and work out the inside with you, from rail heights to drawer depths.
- A quote in writing follows, listing the layout inside, the doors and the finish.
- Everything is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, which holds screws well for rails and runners.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, spray-painted in the workshop or hand-painted on site, and the inside fittings go in last.
How to prepare
- Book any lift and let the concierge or building manager know
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
Arranging a design visit
If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. The design is talked through at the visit, once we have measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Notting Hill?
Others simply want the room to feel calmer. A run of painted doors from wall to wall looks quieter than several separate pieces, and everything has a place behind it.
Common reasons to get in touch include:
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting
- Wasted space beside the chimney breast
- Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
For a family home near St Clement and St James CofE Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.
Choosing a carpenter
- Are the boards named, such as MDF or plywood?
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber
- Have they thought about parking near you?
- How they deal with uneven walls and floors
Common questions about fitted wardrobes
Is parking a problem for fitting in Notting Hill?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to tell us about parking at the design visit.
My home in Notting Hill is a period house with walls that are not straight. Is that a problem?
Yes. Walls in older houses are rarely flat or square, and floors are often out of level, so each piece is scribed to follow the wall and set level on a plinth or adjustable feet. Skirting, picture rails and cornices are met neatly or cut around. Fixings are chosen for the wall, whether solid brick or lath and plaster.
Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.
Can you build wardrobes around a bed?
Yes. Storage around a bed makes good use of a wall that’s often wasted and can include bedside shelves. We measure the bed and the room during the design visit.
Do you work in Notting Hill?
Yes, we do. We work in Notting Hill and across Kensington and Chelsea, and the process is the same everywhere we go.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Each piece is made at our workshop for the room it’s going into, then fitted in your home. It’s built from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
What affects the price in Notting Hill
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The internal fittings
- The number of doors and drawers
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
Access to the room makes a difference too. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.
What we need to know
When you contact us, these help most:
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What the furniture needs to hold
- Anything in the way, such as radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Any ideas or images you’ve saved
There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
