Fitted wardrobes for homes in The Burroughs
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, though they need room in front to open. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. If your home has clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way, fitted wardrobes made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish can solve it.
Bedrooms in interwar houses often have a picture rail but a plainer ceiling than a Victorian room, which makes it simple to take fitted furniture up to the ceiling. Around The Burroughs, where interwar homes, semis and detached houses are a big part of the housing, the top cupboards can hold suitcases and spare bedding. Skirting boards are cut around neatly.
Once you have read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so you can check every detail beforehand.

What happens on fitting day
Once the main sections are fixed in place, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. Gates, paths and steps up to the door are part of the route we measure. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.
- You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
- At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
- We send a written quote.
- The wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, then sprayed if you chose a spray finish.
- The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
- At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.
Before we arrive
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
- If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager

The Burroughs homes and fitted wardrobes
The biggest shares of homes in the area around The Burroughs were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 45%) and before 1919 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. There are 28 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of The Burroughs. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and fitted wardrobes can be designed to work around them. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Barnet included. Vans bringing furniture to The Burroughs fall under it, just as they do across the rest of London. We go through parking and access at the measuring visit.
For a family home near St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, hanging rails set low at first can be raised later, as children get taller. If you live near Hendon Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window.

How we price fitted wardrobes
When we put a quote together, we consider:
- How square the room is
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- The number of doors and drawers
We don’t publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a written quote, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, get in touch through our contact form.
Helping us understand the room
What helps most when you first contact us:
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
- Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
- Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
To get a quote, use our contact form and tell us a little about the room and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
Questions we’re often asked
I live in a flat in The Burroughs. How will the furniture get up the stairs?
We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in The Burroughs?
It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.
What happens at the design visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and a written quote follows.
Do photos help?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough measurements. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
How do I get started?
The first step is to tell us about the room on our contact form with some details about the room. After that, we arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.
Why people ask for fitted wardrobes in The Burroughs
A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Built-in storage makes the room work for its new role while leaving space to move. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.
We’re often asked to help with:
- Bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes
- Mismatched bedroom furniture
- An awkward slope in a loft bedroom
- Condensation behind a wardrobe on an outside wall
If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Church Farmhouse Museum, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.
What to check before you book
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- How they handle walls that are not straight
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. Our wardrobes are made in sections sized to get up the stairs, into the lift and through the doors, ready to assemble in the room. In an extended or opened-up house, old and new walls often meet slightly out of line, and straight-sided ready-made units make that obvious. Built-in pieces are scribed to take up the difference.
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
