Fitted wardrobes for your home in Kingsbury

Kingsbury homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Kingsbury were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 77%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 16%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Kingsbury is partly covered by a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you are unsure, check with the council before work starts. Many London boroughs run controlled parking zones, and Brent sets its own rules. If your street in Kingsbury is in a controlled parking zone, a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. We ask about parking at the design visit, and we’ll plan around it.

If you live in a period home close to Church of the Holy Innocents, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design. If your children go to Kingsbury Green Primary School or a school nearby, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. Near listed buildings like Kingsbury Manor, under half a mile north of the centre of Kingsbury, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

About our fitted wardrobes in Kingsbury

Fitted wardrobes are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. The doors are finished with spray paint in the workshop or painted by hand, in a colour agreed with you. We then fit them in your home, setting them level on adjustable feet or a plinth. Most enquiries start with a room too narrow for hinged doors and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

Many 1930s houses have had a loft conversion, adding a bedroom under a sloping ceiling, and the slope can take storage cut to its angle. A big part of the housing around Kingsbury is interwar, semi-detached or detached. Our part starts once the loft has been converted, and the furniture is scribed to the slope and the walls.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the fitted wardrobe designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Honest limits

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. In practice, that means:

  • Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
  • Treating damp or mould on the walls
  • Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster

If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can drop us a line using the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. How it works.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Hinged or sliding doors
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, unloading takes some planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it’s worth raising at the measuring visit.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s usually a gap left over at the top or at one end. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can use the full height and width.

Bespoke work comes into its own in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.

Questions from Kingsbury

Can you make fitted wardrobes for a home in Kingsbury?

Yes. Kingsbury is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. You can tell us about the room on our contact form to arrange a design visit.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two ways to finish it: spray painted or hand painted. Spray painting gives a smooth, even finish, and hand painting is easy to touch up.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. Electrical work isn’t something we do; it’s a job for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors open a whole section at once but need room in front to swing; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We will help you weigh them up when we visit.

What affects the price of fitted wardrobes?

It depends on the size, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish, along with access and parking. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.

Before and after fitting day

Looking after painted furniture is simple. These habits help most:

  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • For a flat, measure the stairs, landings and lift
  • Decide what goes on shelves and what goes in drawers
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time

Leave a little space between clothes and the back of the wardrobe, particularly on an external wall. Air moving through helps avoid condensation and mould.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use.

How fitting day works

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it is useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the length of the run, the doors and what goes inside, and your quote sets out the fitting days. In a 1930s house with a converted loft, the stairs to the loft room are often steeper than the main flight, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. Elsewhere in the house, the route is usually more generous. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. We come to measure and discuss the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Preparing the room

  • Have your electrician move any sockets or switches beforehand
  • Move furniture and belongings away from the wall
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

How to get a quote

Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space. To share them, message us from the contact page, and we will arrange a design visit.
