Fitted wardrobes in Roehampton: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Roehampton were built between 1945 and 1972 (about 46%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 18%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Part of Roehampton is in the Dover House Estate Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Planning controls in conservation areas are mainly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitting furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. Much of inner London is covered by controlled parking zones run by the boroughs. That usually means a van in Roehampton needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. We ask about parking during the design visit, so the van can be planned for.

If you live in a flat close to Barnes station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Close to Putney Heath? Fitted wardrobes are typically planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.

Roehampton is about 3 miles east of Clapham Junction, part of the London Borough of Wandsworth. Our work covers every London borough and the City of London, Roehampton included. We cover places right across Wandsworth.

We work across SW15 and SW13. Whether you live on a street such as Rodway Road, Cortis Road and Torwood Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for fitted wardrobes. Neighbouring places we cover for fitted wardrobes include Putney (1 mile north-east), Barnes (1 mile north), Mortlake (1 mile north-west), East Sheen (1 mile north-west) and Putney Vale (2 miles south-west). Other parts of Wandsworth we cover include Clapham Junction (3 miles east), Battersea (3 miles east), Wandsworth (2 miles east), Tooting (4 miles south-east), Tooting Bec (4 miles south-east) and Balham (4 miles east).

Fitted wardrobes in Roehampton: what you get

Hanging heights are planned around your clothes, not a catalogue. Long coats and dresses need one tall section, while shirts, jackets and folded trousers suit two rails, one above the other. We also think about who uses it, so the top rail is within comfortable reach. If your home has several odd pieces where one run of storage would do and musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall, that’s what fitted wardrobes are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If you live in one of the post-war homes around Roehampton, bedrooms are often compact but simple to plan. Fitted furniture can make good use of every wall, planned around the space you need in front. Concrete and blockwork walls need fixings chosen for them.

The quote comes in writing, so you can read it at your own pace and share it with anyone else involved. It records the design, the materials and the finish we discussed.

How we price fitted wardrobes

Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
  • Hanging rails, shelves, drawers and other fittings inside
  • Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. It helps to talk about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

Getting in touch

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • Rough measurements: width, height and depth

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A written quote follows the visit for you to look over. To arrange the visit, send us a few details through our contact form.

What happens on fitting day

Fitting day follows a set order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. Then the room is tidied and we look over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Post-war homes often have concrete or block walls, so fixings are chosen for the wall on fitting day. We protect floors and doorways as the furniture comes in, and the pieces are assembled in the room.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the room.
  2. We come to measure and go through the design, including the doors and the finish.
  3. We send a written quote.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. At the end we check each door and drawer with you; fresh paintwork needs gentle handling while it cures.

Before fitting day

  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone
  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Tips worth knowing

Painted fitted furniture is easy to look after with a little care. These habits help most:

  • Measure the gap between the wardrobe wall and the bed
  • Ask your electrician about moving sockets early
  • In a leasehold flat, read the lease first
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall ahead of time

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Avoid abrasive pads and strong sprays, which can mark the finish.

Spread heavy items rather than piling them in one place. Shelves and rails are sized for everyday loads, so tell us during the design visit if you need to store something heavy.

Questions we’re often asked

Do you cover homes near Barnes station?

Yes, homes across Wandsworth and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can use our contact form with some details about the room.

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Will a sloping floor cause problems for fitted wardrobes?

It’s common, and it’s allowed for. We level the wardrobe on a plinth or feet and scribe it to the walls.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need someone to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations. We can’t give advice on leases.

If you live in a flat, getting the furniture in is planned from the start. We measure the stairs, landings, lift and doorways not just the room, so each section is sized to get through.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Roehampton?

A spare room turning into a guest room or a child’s room is another reason. Fitted wardrobes give it proper storage. Adjustable shelves let the inside change over time.

Some of the things we are asked to solve include:

  • Damp or musty clothes against an external wall
  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Not enough hanging space
  • Wasted space beside the chimney breast

If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, such as Roehampton House (at Queen Mary's Hospital), original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

  • Will the quote be in writing?
  • Whether the route into your home has been checked
