Fitted wardrobes in Streatham Park, Wandsworth

In Streatham Park, we design fitted wardrobes around the room you actually have. Your fitted wardrobe is designed at a visit to your home and made in our workshop.

About our fitted wardrobes in Streatham Park

What goes inside is where a fitted wardrobe earns its place. We plan the mix of long hanging, double hanging, shelves and drawers around your clothes, so coats and dresses have room and shirts do not waste height. It’s worth noting the clothes you reach for most before the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish, and people most often get in touch about mismatched bedroom furniture and clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms.

With a large share of homes around Streatham Park built before 1919, many bedrooms sit against solid brick external walls. Those walls can be colder than internal ones, so wardrobes and storage on them are designed with ventilation behind and inside to help avoid condensation. Smaller back bedrooms in houses of that age are good places for fitted wardrobes.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Do you need fitted wardrobes in Streatham Park?

Moving home often prompts it. Wardrobes from an old home rarely suit a new room, or won’t go up the stairs at all. Fitted wardrobes are designed for the room you have now.

Fitted wardrobes can help with:

  • Several odd pieces where one run of storage would do
  • Clothes with nowhere proper to go
  • A room too narrow for hinged doors
  • Musty smells in a wardrobe on a cold wall

Kingswood House, about 2.6 miles east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Before you choose who makes it

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

Is Streatham Park in the area you cover for fitted wardrobes?

Yes, we work across Wandsworth, Streatham Park included, and across the rest of London. You can fill in our short enquiry form to arrange a design visit.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. You don’t need to watch us work, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?

Yes. Wardrobes on outside walls are designed with ventilation behind and inside, using moisture-resistant MDF. If there’s damp on the wall already, it should be sorted first.

Hinged or sliding doors: which suits my bedroom?

It depends on the room. Hinged doors give full access but need clear space in front; sliding doors suit narrow rooms, though only part of the inside is open at once. We’ll help you weigh them up when we visit.

Can you add sockets inside the units?

No. We’re carpenters, so electrical work is for your electrician. We can plan cable routes into the design.

Streatham Park homes and fitted wardrobes

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Streatham Park were built before 1919 (about 63%) and between 1919 and 1939 (about 12%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how fitted wardrobes are fixed and fitted. Part of Streatham Park is in the Streatham Park Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Being in a conservation area mainly affects changes to the outside of a building, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Your council can advise if you are unsure. London’s red routes are run by TfL, and stopping on them is tightly controlled. If your home in Streatham Park is on or near a main road, tell us at the design visit. It lets us plan the stop before fitting day.

For families living near St Leonard's Church of England Primary School, fitted wardrobes in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow. Near listed buildings like Roman Catholic Church of the English Martyrs, under half a mile east of the centre of Streatham Park, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features.

What happens on fitting day

Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, and then we check it all again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Scribing is done on site, which means some cutting in the room or close by, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.

  1. You contact us about fitted wardrobes.
  2. At the design visit we measure the room and agree the layout and doors.
  3. Your written quote follows, setting out the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the wardrobes in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The wardrobes are fitted and scribed, with any hand painting done in the room.
  6. Before we leave, we go through the doors and drawers with you. New paint takes time to cure, so treat it gently at first.

Preparing the room

  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Arranging a design visit

The quote is built from the design visit. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and discuss the design with you. Afterwards, we send a quote in writing. To book one, use our contact form.

Advice

What fitted wardrobes can’t fix

Our work is the furniture itself: designing it, making it in our workshop and fitting it. That means:

  • Moving switches or sockets, which needs an electrician
  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Fixing the cause of condensation or damp

If in doubt, you can get in touch through our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

How it’s made

Plinths and scribe strips

Most fitted wardrobes in older homes need scribing at the sides and top. It is what gives a fitted wardrobe its built-in look.

Hanging rails

Rails are set at heights that suit your clothes: one high rail for long coats and dresses, two rails for shirts and jackets.

Why bespoke in Streatham Park?

Walls and floors in older homes are seldom straight or level. Standalone wardrobes may lean or leave uneven gaps against the wall. We set fitted wardrobes level and scribe them to the walls and ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture is made for flat walls and level floors, which older houses rarely have, so you end up with gaps, wobbles and units that don’t meet the skirting. Fitted furniture is scribed to the wall instead.

Tricky rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. That is reflected in the quote, written once we’ve measured up.
