Fitted home offices for homes in Cricklewood
Each home office is built in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives the desk and shelving their strength, and MDF gives the doors and panels a smooth surface for paint. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Cricklewood and fitted. If you’re living with cables trailing across the desk and floor and glare from a window on the screen, home offices made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.
A large share of the homes around Cricklewood were built before 1919, and Victorian and Edwardian rooms normally have a chimney breast with an alcove each side. An alcove is often just wide enough for a desk, with shelves above. Walls are rarely straight in older houses, so the desk and shelves are scribed to fit.
A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we’ve agreed. It describes the home office we have designed for the room, what it is made from and how it is finished, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Questions we’re often asked
Does a conservation area in or near Cricklewood affect fitted furniture?
Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Cricklewood?
It can be, depending on whether your street is in a controlled parking zone. A van may need a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the design visit.
How long does it take to fit a home office?
How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. Tell us when you contact us if a Saturday suits you best.
Where is the furniture made?
It is made at our workshop, to the sizes taken at the design visit. Then we bring it to your home and fit it.
Do you do plastering or decorating?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.
DIY, flat-pack or bespoke
Cost matters, and it is fair to say so: flat-pack is usually cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.
Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.
Where other trades come in
We make and fit furniture, and we do not do electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering or structural work. Please bear these in mind too:
- Changes to the structure of the house
- New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician
- Plastering and decorating around the office
If in doubt, you can tell us about the room on our contact form and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

Fitting day, step by step
Once the main sections are fixed in place, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. We adjust each one so the gaps line up and it closes cleanly. The time the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. On fitting day, edges are trimmed on site to follow the walls, so we ask for a clear space to work near the room. We keep dust down and tidy as we go. Hand painting, if that is your finish, can follow the fitting.
- To begin, use our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- At the design visit we measure the room, agree the desk height and depth and plan cable routes to the sockets. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a quote in writing for the office.
- We make the desk and storage in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with cable holes and routes built in.
- We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.
How to prepare
- Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
- Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
- Tell us about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Home working in Cricklewood: local notes
Homes built before 1919 make up about 63% of the housing in the streets around Cricklewood, with about 12% built between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. It is a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. The National Heritage List records 6 entries within half a mile of the centre of Cricklewood. Being near listed buildings does not make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. About 63% of homes in the neighbourhood around Cricklewood were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age often have alcoves beside a chimney breast that can take a desk, with shelving above.
If you live in a flat close to Cricklewood station, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room. If you live near Gladstone Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

Why people ask for fitted home offices in Cricklewood
Clutter on the desk is a common reason to get in touch. Purpose-made storage gives files, books and stationery a home. It keeps the work surface clear.
If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting in touch:
- A laptop that moves from room to room
- Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight
- No way to put work away
- A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
If your children go to Anson Primary School or a school nearby, a built-in desk can be shared between home working and homework.
Before you choose who makes it
- Whether you will get a written quote, not just a figure
- How the doors are hung and adjusted
- Whether the quote follows a visit to your home
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. With a bespoke desk, cable routes are part of the design. That keeps the desk and the floor tidy. Recesses in older houses come in every size except the standard ones, so ready-made units rarely fill them properly. Furniture made for the space fills it.
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. You’ll see the figure in your written quote, after the design visit.
