How we make fitted home offices for Dollis Hill

The desk is the heart of a home office. We make it to a height and depth that suit you, your chair and your screen, with storage below where it helps. Shelving and cupboards can then be built around it. The design visit in Dollis Hill is where these choices are made. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are paperwork and files with nowhere to go and shelves that sag under books and files.

A bay in an interwar house makes a bright spot for a built-in desk, and storage can run along the walls either side. Much of the housing around Dollis Hill is interwar, semi-detached or detached. The desk can be shaped to the bay or set across it.

Everything we agree at the design visit goes into the written quote: the layout and internal fittings, the materials and the finish. If something isn’t quite right, tell us before anything is made.

How fitting day works

There isn’t much for you to do on fitting day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and the room should already be cleared, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days. On fitting day, the sections are carried in, assembled, scribed to the wall and levelled. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You contact us about a home office in a spare room, alcove, landing or under the eaves.
  2. We visit to measure the space, including any slope, alcove or uneven wall.
  3. Your written quote sets out the design, materials and finish.
  4. Everything is built in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. On fitting day each piece is set level and scribed to the walls, so there are no gaps along the edges.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once everything is in.

Advice

Dollis Hill homes and fitted home offices

In the area around Dollis Hill, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 47%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how home offices are fixed and fitted. Near the centre of Dollis Hill, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Michael (Grade II), about 0.5 miles south-east. If your own home is listed, changes inside that alter its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Since the zone was extended to the outer boroughs in August 2023, the whole of London has been inside the ULEZ. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Dollis Hill. We go through parking and access at the design visit.

If you live in a flat close to Brent Cross West station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day. For a family home near Our Lady of Grace Catholic Junior School, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. If you live near Gladstone Park, a desk placed to make the most of daylight makes a big difference to a working day.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Questions we’re often asked

Does a conservation area in or near Dollis Hill affect fitted furniture?

Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Do you make fitted home offices for homes in Dollis Hill?

Yes. Dollis Hill is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Brent and London. To get started, you can message us from the contact page with a few details.

What happens when you come to measure?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, and the written quote comes afterwards.

How is the furniture painted?

You can choose between two finishes: by spray or by hand. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

It’s made in sections. That is why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways during the design visit.

Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?

Often, yes. The desk, shelving and storage can be designed to leave room for a bed, or with doors that close over the desk. If space is tight, a wall bed can be built in alongside.

Honest limits

Before you plan the job, it helps to know what we do not do:

  • Knocking through or opening up rooms
  • Installing IT equipment or broadband
  • Converting a loft to make room for an office

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can use our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. How a job runs, step by step.

Materials and parts

  • Filing drawers
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Cable routes
  • Birch plywood
  • Spray-painted finish

Practical tips

People planning fitted home offices often ask about these. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Look at the window and where the light falls
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Note what sits on and around your desk
  • Note how many files and books you need to store

Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. You will be ready to set up your desk.

Keep cables in their routes rather than pulled across the desk. Wires pulled across an edge can wear it. A little tidying now and then keeps the office calm.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

Each piece is designed for one room, so each price is too. The things that affect it are:

  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • The overall size of the piece
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
  • Doors and drawers, and how many

Parking is part of the price picture in London. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit, so we can plan for it.

Before the design visit

Before the design visit, it helps us to know about:

  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth

Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a written quote. Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. To arrange a visit, message us from the contact page.
