Fitted home offices in East Ham, Newham

Fitted home offices in East Ham: built-in desks, shelving and storage for working from home. Each piece is designed at a visit to your home, made at our workshop and fitted by us.

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • A screen that is hard to read by the window
  • Wires with no tidy route

Tips worth knowing

None of this takes much effort. What we’d suggest:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Note how many files and books you need to store
  • Let us know about parking near your home

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.

Keep heavy loads on the shelves meant for them. Shelves are made for the load you planned. Keep the weight spread along the shelf.

About our fitted home offices in East Ham

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. Our home offices are made for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and loft rooms, planned around how you work. In East Ham, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. Typical reasons to get in touch are a desk buried under papers and a screen that’s hard to read by the window, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Older homes tend to have generous ceiling heights, and a large share of the homes around East Ham date from then. That leaves room for shelving above a desk right up to the picture rail or cornice. Some internal walls in older houses are lath and plaster, so fixings are chosen to suit, and long shelves are sized so they do not sag.

Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. It also says how the furniture will be finished: spray painted or hand painted.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. Ours is spray-painted or hand-painted in a colour agreed with you, so it can match the room or the woodwork. Tall ceilings in older homes leave a band of empty wall above standard furniture, wasting space that could hold things you rarely use. Built-in pieces can run to the cornice or the picture rail.

In London, parking can affect the price. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit.

Fitting day, step by step

However carefully a piece is made in the workshop, it still has to meet the room, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it, until the line is tight. How long the fitting itself takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Older London houses often have narrow hallways and tight turns on the stairs, so home offices are made in sections sized to get through. Floors, stairs and doorways are covered before anything is carried through, and the sections are joined and scribed in the room.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room and the home it’s in.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, and discuss the design. It is useful to tell us about parking, as much of London has controlled parking zones.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. We build the office in our workshop, in sections, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The sections are brought in, joined and scribed to the walls, ready for work.

Before fitting day

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician beforehand
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way

Questions from East Ham

Is East Ham in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes. East Ham is one of the places we work, along with the rest of Newham and London. You can drop us a line using the contact form to arrange a design visit.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Barking station?

Yes, homes across Newham and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit.

What materials do you use for home offices?

We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood gives strength to the desk, shelves and drawers, while the doors and panels are MDF, which paints well. Everything is finished by spray painting or hand painting.

Can you fit furniture to uneven walls?

That’s normal in older homes, and it is what scribing is for. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

How long will the home office fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is made at our workshop before we arrive. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

How much does a fitted home office cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, get in touch through our contact form and we will arrange a design visit.

Working from home in East Ham

About 55% of the homes in the area around East Ham went up before 1919, and about 16% between 1945 and 1972, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. For carpentry, the era of a house is a useful clue to how square its rooms are and what its walls are made of. The centre of East Ham is within about a quarter of a mile of the East Ham Town Centre Conservation Area. The controls in a conservation area are mostly about the outside of buildings, so furniture fitted inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Around East Ham, about 55% of homes date from before 1919, well above the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That makes period details like uneven walls, alcoves and picture rails more likely to shape the design.

The wider area includes historic houses like Eastbury Manor House, about 1.9 miles east. If your own home is a period one, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. If your home is one of the older houses near St Bartholomew's Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary Magdalene, about 0.5 miles south of the centre of East Ham, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can need listed building consent.

East Ham is about 1 mile west of Plaistow, in the London Borough of Newham. Homes in East Ham are part of the area we cover for fitted home offices. East Ham is one of 26 places on our list for Newham.

What it’s made from

Doors and drawer fronts

A desk can sit behind doors, out of sight when you’re done. It suits a room that also has to work as a guest room or living room. We will talk through the options at the measuring visit.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF cuts cleanly, which suits panelled doors and the angled parts of a desk under a slope. The grade we use is moisture-resistant and paints well. Most of what you see is MDF.

What it costs

The price for your room depends on:

  • Doors and drawers, and how many
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish
  • Where a van can park, such as a permit bay or a bay suspension
  • The overall size of the piece

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying, and that is part of the price. We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit.

What to send when you contact us

You don’t need exact measurements or a plan. It’s enough to send:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • What the furniture needs to hold

To make a start, send us a few details through our contact form and let us know which room you have in mind and roughly what you’d like. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and send you a quote in writing afterwards.
