Fitted home offices in Royal Docks, Newham

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted home offices for homes in Royal Docks, each designed at a visit to your home.

  • Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
  • No proper place to work from home
  • Wires with no tidy route

Fitted home offices designed for your room

About our fitted home offices in Royal Docks

We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it is brought to your home in Royal Docks and fitted. We make home offices from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and the things people most often want solved are a room with two jobs to do and glare from a window on the screen.

Many homes around Royal Docks have been built since 2000, and newer homes often have compact second bedrooms that end up as offices. Home offices can be planned to share the room with a guest bed. Stud walls need the right fixings for loaded shelves.

The written quote is your record of the job. It sets out the home office designed for your room, its materials and its finish, and it’s what the workshop builds to.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Flat-pack and off-the-shelf furniture has its place. If the walls are straight and the space suits standard sizes, it often does the job.

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Royal Docks

My home in Royal Docks is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

We measure the route in along with the room itself: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. Home offices are made in our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. It helps to check any building rules and your lease before fitting day.

Do you cover homes near Custom House station?

Yes. We cover all of Newham and the rest of London. You can get in touch through our contact form to arrange a design visit, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

Do I need planning permission for fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. In a listed building, check with the council’s conservation officer before any work.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and your quote sets out the fitting days. Because everything is made at our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We work tidily and keep the room as clear as we can.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base.

How it’s made

Shelves

Office shelving often carries heavy loads. Span, depth and load all matter. Each shelf is made to stay straight under what you plan to store.

Birch plywood

A home office shelf often carries heavy books and folders. Birch plywood suits them, as it’s strong and stiff. Where the span is long, we add thickness or support.

From workshop to your room

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it’s fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. In a newer development, the lift, the concierge and set working hours may all need checking, so it’s useful to sort them out beforehand. The furniture is built in sections that fit the lift and doorways.

  1. You get in touch with some details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use, and plan where the cables will run.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Preparing the room

  • Arrange any electrical changes with your electrician in advance
  • Make sure pets are kept safely away
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Home working in Royal Docks: local notes

In the neighbourhood around Royal Docks, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 49%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 44%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Royal Docks, Historic England’s list includes The Connaught Tavern (Grade II), under half a mile north-west, and Central Buffet at Custom House (Grade II), about 0.6 miles east. If your own home is listed, works inside that affect its character, like fixing into or removing original joinery, can require listed building consent. Ask the council’s conservation officer before anything is fixed. About 2% of homes around Royal Docks were built before 1919, well below the figure for Newham as a whole, about 37%, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We check what the walls are made of at the measuring visit, as they vary with the age of the home.

If you live near Beckton District Park, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For families living near Calverton Primary School, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart. The wider area includes historic houses like Queen's House, about 2.7 miles south-west. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window.

Royal Docks is about 1 mile north-west of Plaistow, within the London Borough of Newham. We cover Royal Docks as part of our work across Newham. Across Newham, we cover Royal Docks, along with the rest of the borough.

In E16 and E6, the process is the same as anywhere else in London. We cover homes on streets like Drew Road, Leyes Road and Camel Road, along with the roads around them, whether you want fitted home offices or another piece made for the room. Royal Docks is near the A1020, so if your home is on a main road, mention it when you contact us. We also cover Custom House (1 mile west), Silvertown (1 mile south-west), North Woolwich (1 mile south-east), West Silvertown (1 mile west) and Canning Town (1 mile north-west). Other parts of Newham we cover include Stratford (3 miles north-west), Forest Gate (3 miles north), East Ham (2 miles north), Upton Park (2 miles north), Greengate (2 miles north-west) and Maryland (3 miles north-west).

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

If you only need a simple desk against a straight wall, an off-the-shelf desk may be enough. Bespoke work makes sense in an alcove, under a slope, or where you want the desk, shelves and storage to work together. We’ll give you an honest view during the design visit. Rooms in newer homes are often compact, and standard depths can take too much floor, whereas fitted pieces can be as shallow as the space needs. It still uses the full height.

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. A larger piece means more material and more time, so size is the starting point. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Why work with us in Royal Docks

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Work across the whole of London
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Scribed to uneven walls

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and how to compare quotes.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

We quote each job after the design visit, because no two rooms are the same. These are the things that affect it:

  • Parking near your home
  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The internal fittings
  • Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square

Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What to send when you contact us

There is no need for exact sizes or plans. Just send what you can:

  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • Approximate measurements of the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • A few pictures of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

We quote once we have seen the room. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, then send a quote in writing. Every piece is quoted for your room after the design visit. To book a design visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
