Fitted home offices in Gidea Park

A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. The office can be planned to leave space for a bed or a sofa, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. We will look at how the room is used when we visit in Gidea Park. People typically come to us about no way to put work away and glare from a window on the screen; the furniture is made from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

If you live in one of the interwar houses or semis around Gidea Park, the spare bedroom or dining room often doubles as the office. A built-in desk with doors that close over it lets the room go back to its other job at the end of the day. Cable routes and the position of sockets are planned into the design.

Our quotes are written in plain words, without jargon. They say what will be made, what it’s made from and how it will be finished.

What happens on fitting day

Furniture made in a workshop still has to meet the room it’s going into, and fitting day is where that happens. Few walls in older London homes are truly flat or square, so each edge that meets a wall is scribed to follow it. How long the fitting itself takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Fitting day means carrying in the sections, joining them and fitting them to the walls. Hand-painted furniture can be finished on site; spray-painted pieces arrive finished from the workshop. Saturdays can be arranged.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
  3. Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and leave it ready for work, with the cable routes left open.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Leave a clear route from the front door to the room
  • Let us know if your street is in a controlled parking zone

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it, when we have measured up and talked through the design. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.

Advice

What it is made from

Pull-out drawers

Drawers can form a pedestal under the desk. The middle stays open for your knees and chair. The design visit settles the layout.

Doors and drawer fronts

Doors can close over shelves, files or a printer. We make them plain or panelled, with handles to match. When you finish, the doors close on work.

Fitted home offices for homes in Gidea Park

Homes built between 1945 and 1972 make up about 40% of the housing in the neighbourhood around Gidea Park, with about 34% built between 1919 and 1939, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. There are 10 entries on the National Heritage List within half a mile of the centre of Gidea Park. Being near listed buildings doesn’t make a home listed, and you can check any address on Historic England’s list. Controlled parking zones are common across London, and Havering sets its own rules. Where a street in Gidea Park is controlled, a van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension from the council. It is useful to let us know about parking during the design visit.

If you live in a period home close to St Michael and All Angels Church, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. The wider area includes historic houses such as Hare Hall, about 0.6 miles south-east. If your own home is a period one, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. For a flat near Gidea Park station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Gidea Park

Do you cover homes near Gidea Park station?

Yes, homes across Havering and the rest of London are within the area we cover. You can message us from the contact page to arrange a design visit, and tell us about parking and access at the same time.

Is Gidea Park in the area you cover for fitted home offices?

Yes, Gidea Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. We start with a design visit to measure the room and talk through what you need, followed by a quote.

How long will the home office fitting take?

How long the fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Because everything is made in our workshop, the work in your home is the fitting itself. We keep the room as tidy as possible while we work.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Photos of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, especially with rough measurements. You can send them when you message us from the contact page.

Can you add power points to the desk?

Sockets and wiring are for your electrician, not us. The desk is planned with routes for cables and space for any sockets. We can agree where sockets should go when we visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you have chosen.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted home offices. They help before and after fitting:

  • Estimate the shelf space you’ll need
  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • List the equipment you use, from screens to printers
  • Look at the window and where the light falls

A soft, damp cloth is the best way to keep the furniture clean. Dry them afterwards, and avoid abrasive pads and strong solvents. The desk edge is touched most, so give it a wipe now and then.

Do not overload shelves beyond what they were designed for. We size shelves for what you told us they’d carry. Spread heavy books and files evenly.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

The real difference is in the fit: scribed edges, a level base on an uneven floor and furniture that meets the ceiling, skirting and picture rail. In an older room, standard units rarely manage that.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, and standard units leave gaps.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk can’t. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and interwar homes often have all three. Fitted furniture is made around them.

The finish affects the cost: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. Your choice, along with the size and the fittings, is reflected in the written quote.
