Flats, conversions and leaseholders

For a rented home, access for the design visit and fitting day has to be agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Tell us about them at the measuring visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

TV and media units for homes in Gidea Park

Sockets often need to move for a built-in TV wall, such as behind the screen or in the equipment cupboard. That job is for your electrician, and Part P of the Building Regulations covers some electrical work in homes. Ideally it’s done before the unit goes in, and we can tell you where the unit will sit. If your home has a TV stand that doesn’t fit the wall and empty alcoves beside the TV, TV and media units made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted can solve it.

Many houses from between the wars, and many semis, have been extended or opened up inside, and around Gidea Park, interwar houses, semis and detached homes make up a large share of the housing. In a long knocked-through room, TV and media units can run the full length of one wall, or mark out the sitting end from the dining end. An extension’s plasterboard walls need different fixings from the original brick or block.

Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is made in our workshop. It describes the design, the materials and the finish agreed at the visit, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint

Plinths and scribe strips

In older houses, we typically scribe the sides and top. It is what gives the unit its built-in look.

Spray-painted finish

A spray-painted finish is applied in our workshop, giving a smooth, even surface that suits a modern TV wall.

From workshop to your room

Finishing comes last. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is normally only filling and touching up to do in the room; hand painting, if that is what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. Loft stairs in an interwar house can be tight, with a low ceiling at the top, so pieces for a loft room are sized for the narrowest point. The main stairs in houses of that age are typically straighter. The pieces are joined and fixed once in place.

  1. You describe the TV wall and your equipment, from set-top boxes to speakers.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. If anything in it is unclear, ask us.
  4. We then make the unit in our workshop, with cable routes planned in.
  5. The unit is fitted in your home, ready for your equipment.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Keep pets in another room while we work
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

Starting with a design visit

If you know what you want, say so; if not, we can work it out together at the visit. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Advice

Questions from Gidea Park

Is parking a problem for fitting in Gidea Park?

It depends on the street, as many London boroughs run controlled parking zones. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. It’s useful to let us know about parking during the design visit, so the day can be planned around it.

Can you make TV and media units for a home in Gidea Park?

Yes, Gidea Park is within the area we cover, which takes in all of Havering and the rest of London. The first step is a design visit, where we measure and talk through the design, and then we send a quote.

Should I send photos?

Yes. They give us a feel for the space before we visit. It helps to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.

Will my boxes get too hot inside the unit?

Media equipment runs warm and needs airflow. The unit is planned with open backs or gaps where boxes go. Once it’s in, do not block the gaps.

Will the cables be hidden?

That’s the aim, and it is planned from the start. Routes, openings and removable panels let you add or change leads later. If the TV is wall-mounted, we plan a route behind the screen.

Do you move sockets for a TV unit?

Electrical work isn’t something we do. Sockets and wiring are for your electrician. We tell you where the unit will sit so the sockets end up in the right place.

Flat-pack or bespoke?

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths.

Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there is often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Gidea Park homes and TV and media units

About 40% of the homes in the area around Gidea Park went up between 1945 and 1972, and about 34% between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Near the centre of Gidea Park, Historic England’s list includes The Royal Liberty School (Grade II*), about 0.6 miles south-east, and The Ship Public House (Grade II), under half a mile south. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features like panelling can require listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 49% of households in the streets around Gidea Park, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Hare Hall, about 0.6 miles south-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. If your home is one of the older houses near St Michael and All Angels Church, walls that bow and floors that slope are why TV and media units are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place. Living in a block of flats near Gidea Park station? Then it is useful to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

Is bespoke worth it?

Most stands have a cable hole or two at the back, but cables typically still show somewhere. A built-in unit has routes planned through it. Even in a 1930s house, walls and floors are not perfectly true, so standalone furniture can still lean or leave gaps. Built-in pieces are adjusted to the room on site.

Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design.
