How fitting works for wall beds

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Where the floor slopes, we bring the furniture up to level on adjustable feet or a plinth, which keeps the lines straight. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Where there is no lift, each section is sized to be carried up the stairs safely. The stair turns and landings set the limit. Once inside, the sections are joined and fixed.

  1. First, you tell us about the space. Mention who the bed is for.
  2. The design visit covers measuring, the wall and the layout.
  3. A written quote is sent to you.
  4. The cabinets are made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the bed and storage in your home.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets in another room while we work

Wall beds in Hackney Central: what you get

Many spare rooms are only just big enough for a bed, and a bed that’s used a few times a year takes most of the floor. A wall bed gives that floor back during the day, ready for work, exercise or play. When guests come, the bed folds down. Typical reasons to get in touch are a proper bed instead of a sofa bed and a bed that looks like cupboards by day, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.

In a compact bedroom, the wall above the door and over the bed is often unused. Since most households around Hackney Central live in purpose-built flats, bridging those spaces with fitted cupboards can add a lot of storage. Top cupboards suit things you need only now and then.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the wall bed we’ve designed for the room, its materials and its finish.

Questions we’re often asked

Can parking be tricky on fitting day in Hackney Central?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, so the day can be planned around it.

I live in a flat in Hackney Central. How will the furniture get up the stairs?

We measure the route in not just the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

Do you do the electrics?

No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We will design around them.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You choose it. The paint colour is agreed with you.

Can a wall bed go on any wall?

That depends on what the wall and floor are made of. The mechanism has to be fixed securely as its maker specifies, to a wall or floor that can take the load, so we check it at the design visit.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It is something we deal with all the time. The furniture is scribed to follow the walls and levelled on feet or a plinth, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Is bespoke worth it?

Standard units seldom reach the ceiling or fit wall to wall. We can build to the full height and width and fill the rest of the wall with storage. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Fitted furniture is planned around those.

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

The age of a home tells us a lot about its walls, floors and ceilings, and so about how wall beds are fixed and fitted. Original fireplaces, shutters and panelling are worth keeping where they survive, and the furniture can be designed around them rather than over them. For a family home near Gayhurst Community School, the inside of wall beds can be laid out with adjustable shelves, so the space keeps up as children grow. If you live in a flat close to London Fields station, check any building rules on lifts and working hours early, and the sections will be sized for the way in. Sutton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, tall ceilings give wall beds room to reach the cornice.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. We choose fixings to suit the wall.

For flats on red routes or busy main roads, getting the furniture from the van to the door needs planning. TfL runs the red routes, and the stopping rules are strict, so it is worth raising at the measuring visit.

When is bespoke worth it?

Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. How much a shelf bends depends on its span, depth and load, and long runs need a thicker shelf, a lip along the front or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

It’s worth being honest about cost: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke earns its place where the room is awkward, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Caring for painted furniture

People planning wall beds often ask about these. They’re worth knowing before and after fitting:

  • Keep children away while the bed moves
  • Think about where extra bedding will go
  • Look at your lease before fixing to the walls
  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down

The paint needs time to cure fully after fitting. Treat the cabinet gently at first, and clean the cabinet with a soft, damp cloth.

Check how much floor there is in front of the cabinet. The bed needs room to fold down, so plan where furniture will sit.
