Fitted home offices in Hackney

In Hackney, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. We design your home office at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • A desk in the wrong light
  • A corner too odd for a standard desk
  • A laptop that moves from room to room

Fitted home offices designed for your room

Bespoke fitted home offices or ready-made?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. A fitted office stays with the house, and it uses the space in a way a standalone desk cannot. Which suits you depends on your plans. Standard furniture sizes rarely suit the shape of a flat, so it can waste space or block a door or radiator. Built-in pieces are designed around them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. At the design visit, we work out what you need inside, and the quote follows.

Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. We measure and plan for the space you have in Hackney. If your home has a guest room that’s needed for work and wires with no tidy route, home offices made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed can solve it.

With most households around Hackney in purpose-built flats, mansion blocks and modern blocks are both possible. In a mansion block, alcoves and tall ceilings suit a desk with shelving above, while newer flats often have stud walls that need suitable fixings. We plan cable routes around the sockets you have.

The quote names the materials: moisture-resistant MDF, birch plywood or both, depending on the design. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Flats, leases and landlords

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let. It is made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t give advice on leases.

Working from home in Hackney

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around Hackney were built before 1919 (about 33%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. Hackney is partly covered by the Well Street Conservation Area, according to Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are mainly about the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If you’re unsure, check with the council before work starts. Purpose-built flats are home to about 57% of households in the area around Hackney, according to Census 2021. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

Sutton House, about 0.3 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, an alcove beside the chimney breast is often just right for a built-in desk. Living in a block of flats near Homerton station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. For an older house near Church of St Luke, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Hackney is part of the London Borough of Hackney, about 2 miles south-west of Shoreditch. We work across all London boroughs and the City of London, and Hackney is part of that. We cover places right across the rest of London, large and small.

We make fitted home offices across E9, E8, E3 and E5. Whether you live on a street such as Homerton High Street, Primrose Square and St John's Church Road or on one nearby, we can arrange a design visit for fitted home offices. Main roads around Hackney include the A107 and B113, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Nearby, we also make fitted home offices in Homerton (1 mile north), Lower Clapton (1 mile north), Hackney Central (1 mile west), London Fields (1 mile south-west) and Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-west). Across the rest of the rest of London, our area takes in Shoreditch (2 miles south-west), Hoxton (2 miles south-west), West Hackney (2 miles north-west), Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north-west) and Upper Clapton (2 miles north).

Around Hackney

Our area takes in the homes around The Urswick School, Cardinal Pole Catholic School and Chesham Arms. Hackney has its own railway station: Homerton station. Other landmarks nearby include Homerton University Hospital (close by, under half a mile north) and Cell Project Space (0.9 miles south-west). For a walk, there’s Old Ford Island.

FAQs: fitted home offices in Hackney

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Typically not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character can require listed building consent from the council. If you’re unsure, the council can confirm.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to Homerton station?

Yes, homes across London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.

Does someone need to be home during the fitting?

Someone needs to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Every part is made in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You choose it, and it’s agreed with you before painting. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.

Should I send photos?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough measurements. You can send them when you tell us about the room on our contact form.

How fitting works for fitted home offices

In older rooms, the furniture typically has to meet skirting, picture rails, cornice or coving. We cut and scribe the furniture around them on site, so it sits neatly against the room. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and many buildings limit noisy work to certain hours. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed.
  4. Your office furniture is built in our workshop, sized for the room.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day
  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going

Arranging a design visit

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of photos if you can take them. To send them, message us from the contact page. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Electrical work for the office, which your electrician carries out
  • Making good the walls, which is for a plasterer or decorator
  • Knocking through or opening up rooms

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can tell us about the room on our contact form and we’ll tell you. How a job runs, step by step.

Boards, parts and finishes

  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Filing drawers
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Built-in desks
  • Cable routes

Caring for painted furniture

A little care keeps the finish looking good. Here are our suggestions:

  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit
  • Tell us about every device that needs a home
  • Think about glare on your screen
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, send us a few details through our contact form and tell us.
