Fitted home offices in Hackney: how it works
Landings and the space under the eaves can also take a desk. Under a slope, the desk is placed where there is headroom to sit and stand. On a landing, it has to leave room to walk by. We measure and plan for the space you have in Hackney. Typical reasons to get in touch are a room with two jobs to do and wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day, and the answer is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.
There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it’s useful to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed during the design visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
- To begin, send us a few details through our contact form; a brief note on the room and your desk set-up is plenty.
- We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
- You receive a written quote for the office.
- The office furniture is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
- The desk and shelves are fitted, with the cable routes ready for your equipment.
Quotes in Hackney
Access to the room makes a difference too. Several flights of stairs, a small lift or a narrow hall can mean smaller sections and more carrying. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

How to get a quote
Every quote follows a design visit. We measure the space, check the walls and floors and discuss what you’d like, and the written quote comes after. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit. To book a design visit, message us from the contact page.

Fitted home offices for homes across Hackney
Period homes in Hackney often have alcoves just wide enough for a desk, while newer flats nearby suit a desk along one wall of a spare room. We look at the options at the design visit.
About 35% of the homes in Hackney went up before 1919, and about 24% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Purpose-built flats are home to about 60% of households in Hackney, based on Census 2021. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day. Of the 20 places we have local pages for in Hackney, 7 have their centre inside a conservation area, going by Historic England’s records. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission.
The ULEZ has covered every London borough since August 2023, and TfL’s red routes have strict stopping rules, so we plan access to your home in Hackney ahead of fitting day.
Shoreditch: If you live near Artillery Ground, a desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. If your children go to Virginia Primary School or a school nearby, closed cupboards above a desk keep work papers and school books apart.
The problems fitted home offices solve
People also want an office that looks good on video calls. Shelving and cupboards can give a calm, ordered background. It is a small detail that many people appreciate.
Most of the enquiries we get are about things like these:
- Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day
- Paperwork and files with nowhere to go
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- Shelving that bows under the load
Where other trades come in
We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:
- Installing IT equipment or broadband
- Any wiring or new lights, which need an electrician
- Converting a loft to make room for an office
Flats, blocks and rented homes
If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.
Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Looking after your furniture
Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. Here are a few tips worth knowing:
- Tell us about every device that needs a home
- Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
- Think about glare on your screen
- Note the position of sockets in the room
Before we leave, we check every drawer, door and shelf with you. The cable routes are pointed out so you know where everything goes. That way, you can start work right away.
Use the cable routes so wires do not rub the paint. Tight cables can mark edges over time. Every so often, tidy the cables back into place.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Off-the-shelf desks come in the maker’s finishes. We paint the office in the colour you choose, so it sits with the rest of the room.
What to check before you book
- A written quote that sets out the job
- Whether the quote says what the furniture is made from
- How doors and drawers are fitted
- Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
FAQs: fitted home offices in Hackney
Do you fit furniture for landlords?
Yes. We make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let as well as for householders. Access has to be agreed with the tenants.
Is an alcove big enough for a desk?
Often, yes. An alcove beside a chimney breast can take a desk with shelves above. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. We’ll check the size at the design visit.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then brought to your home and fitted. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you add power points to the desk?
That’s work for your electrician. We plan the furniture around them, with cable routes through the desk and units. They can then be fitted where we’ve allowed for them.
Is it possible to have an office and a guest bed in one room?
Often, yes. We plan the office so there is still space for guests, or with doors that hide the desk away. A fold-down wall bed can also be built into the design.
Do I need to be in when you fit?
We need someone to let us in. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Can the fitting be on a Saturday?
Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
