Dalston Fitted Home Offices
Walls in older London homes are rarely straight, so we scribe the furniture to follow them. Our work on fitted home offices in Dalston starts with a design visit, and everything is made at our workshop.
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- Shelves that sag under books and files
- An alcove or landing that could take a desk

The problems fitted home offices solve
People also want an office that looks good on video calls. Built-in shelves and doors give a tidy backdrop. It’s a small detail that many people appreciate.
People usually get in touch with us about things like these:
- An tricky space with no furniture that fits
- A tangle of chargers and leads
- A spare room that has to be an office and a guest room
- Working at the kitchen table
Close to Haggerston Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.
Before you hire any carpenter
- A quote in writing that sets out the job
- Whether they measure the room themselves
- Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Fitted home offices in Dalston: what you get
A spare room often makes the best home office, especially if it still needs to work as a guest room. We can design desks, shelving and cupboards that leave room for a bed, or with doors that close over the desk when you finish work. We’ll look at how the room is used when we visit in Dalston. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about paperwork and files with nowhere to go and shelving that bows under the load.
Most households around Dalston live in purpose-built flats, so the home office often has to share a room. A built-in desk in an alcove, a hallway recess or the end of a bedroom keeps work contained. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors.
Once you’ve read the quote and decided to go ahead, the furniture is built in our workshop. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so you can check every detail beforehand.

Your questions about fitted home offices in Dalston
How do you fit fitted home offices in a flat in Dalston?
We measure the route in as well as the room: the stairs, landings, lift and doors. The furniture is made in sections that fit the stairs and lift, and put together in the room. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.
Can you fit furniture in a home close to Dalston Junction station?
Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can drop us a line using the contact form with a few details about the room.
Can you come on a Saturday?
Yes, by arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you get in touch.
Can you fit furniture on an external wall?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.
Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?
Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.
Do I need permission in a conservation area?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
When is bespoke worth it?
Long shelves are where off-the-shelf often struggles. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. We design shelves with that in mind.
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture cannot usually do that in an older room.
What fitted home offices cannot fix
Not everything around fitted home offices is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here’s what to know:
- Connecting printers and screens
- Knocking through or opening up rooms
- Building a loft conversion, which isn’t our work
If you are not sure what’s possible in your room, you can get in touch through our contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

How fitting works for fitted home offices
Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference, and that keeps the doors and shelves true. After that, it is fixed to the wall using fixings that suit the wall, whether that is solid brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard. Noise from drilling travels in a block, so neighbours may appreciate a note, and some buildings set hours for noisy work. Fitting day is planned around any rules your building has. Saturdays can be arranged if your building allows work then.
- You get in touch with some details about the room. A line on how you work helps too.
- We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
- Your quote sets out the design, the materials and the finish.
- We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
- The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.
How to prepare
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Let us know about any meters, fuse boards or boilers in the area

Arranging a design visit
Getting a quote starts with a few details: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, send us a few details through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

What it is made from
Moisture-resistant MDF
Moisture-resistant MDF is stable and takes paint well. It is used for the doors, fronts and side panels, where a smooth, even finish matters.
Pull-out drawers
Desk drawers keep the things you use every day close by. A deep drawer can hold hanging files. Each one is sized for what it holds.
Dalston homes and fitted home offices
The biggest shares of homes in the streets around Dalston were built before 1919 (about 35%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 24%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. It’s a good starting point, though every room is still measured, as two homes of the same age rarely match. Near the centre of Dalston, Historic England’s list includes Church of St Mark (Grade II*), less than half a mile north, and Church of St Barnabas (Grade II*), about 0.5 miles north. For a listed home, works inside that affect its character can need listed building consent from the council, for instance removing or fixing into original panelling. It is worth speaking to the council’s conservation officer before the design is final. Purpose-built flats are home to about 62% of households in the neighbourhood around Dalston, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.
If your children go to Holy Trinity Church of England Primary School or a school nearby, a desk long enough for two can serve a laptop and a homework book side by side. If you live in a flat close to Dalston Junction station, the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in.
