Fitted home offices in London Fields: what you get

A fitted home office gives your work a proper place in the house. We design and make built-in desks, shelving and storage for spare rooms, alcoves, landings and the space under the eaves, planned around how you work. In London Fields, as everywhere we work, it begins with a visit to measure and plan. We make home offices from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted, and people most often get in touch about a corner too odd for a standard desk and working at the kitchen table.

Getting a long desk top into a flat takes planning, so the desk is designed to come in sections. Around London Fields, most households live in purpose-built flats, so the route in is measured at the design visit. The joins are placed where they won’t catch papers or show.

After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It sets out the design we have talked through, the materials and the finish.

How fitting day works

The last stage of the day is the finish. If the furniture was spray painted in the workshop, we fill the fixing holes and touch up on site; hand painting, if that’s what you chose, can be done in place once everything is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote. With little room to spare in a flat, pieces come in as they’re needed. Floors are covered and dust is kept down. The fixings suit each wall, whether solid or stud.

  1. You get in touch and let us know about the work you do and the equipment you use.
  2. We visit to measure and plan the desk, shelves and storage, and look at where the light falls. New sockets or wiring are a job for your electrician, ideally before fitting.
  3. A quote in writing follows with the design, materials and finish.
  4. The office furniture is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, with gaps for cables planned in.
  5. We fit it in your home, scribed and set level, with the finish sprayed beforehand or painted by hand on site.

Getting ready for fitting day

  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves
  • Clear the hallway and stairs so the sections can come through
  • Get any new sockets or wiring done by your electrician before fitting day

How to get a quote

The design visit is where every quote starts. We measure the room properly, check how the walls and floors run and talk through the design with you. A quote in writing follows the visit, so you can take your time with it. To book one, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Honest limits

We don’t treat damp or carry out building work, and there are a few other limits too:

  • Setting up computers, screens or networks
  • Changes to the structure of the house
  • Turning an unconverted loft into a room

Not sure whether your space suits fitted home offices? You can message us from the contact page and we’ll tell you before you arrange a visit. How it works.

What it is made from

  • Spray-painted finish
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Cable routes
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Built-in desks
  • Birch plywood

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

If your flat is leasehold, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. It’s made from the same moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood as any of our work, with a spray or hand-painted finish.

Fitted home offices in London Fields: local notes

The biggest shares of homes in the neighbourhood around London Fields were built before 1919 (about 34%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 23%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Within a mile of the centre of London Fields, 22 conservation areas are recorded by Historic England. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. In inner London, a large part of the street parking sits inside borough-run controlled parking zones. So a van fitting furniture in London Fields usually needs a visitor’s permit, a paid parking bay or a bay suspension arranged through the council. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.

Sutton House, about 0.7 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Near listed buildings like The New Lansdowne Club, less than half a mile east of the centre of London Fields, older homes may keep original joinery that home offices can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent.

London Fields is about 1 mile south-west of Shoreditch, in the London Borough of Hackney. London Fields is part of the area we cover. Our work takes in places right across Hackney.

Design visits and fitting in E8, E2 and E9 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. You will find streets here such as Tudor Road, Forest Road and Duncan Road, and we cover homes on all of them for fitted home offices. Main roads around London Fields include the A1207, and we plan where the van can stop before fitting day. Close by, we also work in Hackney Central (1 mile north), Cambridge Heath (1 mile south-east), Dalston (1 mile north-west), Hackney (1 mile north-east) and Kingsland (1 mile north-west). Across the rest of Hackney, our area takes in Stoke Newington (2 miles north-west), Stamford Hill (2 miles north), Upper Clapton (2 miles north), Manor House (3 miles north-west), Lea Bridge (2 miles north-east) and Hackney Marshes (2 miles north-east).

Do you need fitted home offices in London Fields?

Many spare rooms need to work as an office and a guest room. A built-in desk and storage can leave space for a bed. It makes the most of a room that is only sometimes used for guests.

Here’s what fitted home offices can help with:

  • An tricky space with no furniture that fits
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Working at the kitchen table
  • A desk in the wrong light

If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Do I need permission for fitted furniture in a conservation area?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Can you fit furniture in a home close to London Fields station?

Yes. We cover all of Hackney and the rest of London. To get started, you can fill in our short enquiry form with a few details about the room, and let us know about parking and access at the same time.

What if the stairs or lift are small?

It’s made in sections. That’s why we measure the stairs, lift and doorways at the measuring visit.

Do I get to choose the colour?

You do. We agree the colour with you, and it’s set out in the quote.

Can you fit a desk under a sloping ceiling?

Yes, in a loft that’s already converted. The desk is placed where there’s headroom to sit and stand comfortably, with storage built into the lower parts of the slope. The conversion itself is not our work.

Can you fit furniture on an external wall?

External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we allow for ventilation behind and inside the furniture to avoid condensation. If there’s damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.

Why bespoke in London Fields?

Standalone office furniture can move with you, which suits a short stay. Fitted furniture stays put, and it makes more of the room. The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay. Ready-made furniture stops at a set height, whatever the ceiling, which wastes the space above. Fitted furniture runs to the ceiling.

We do not publish set prices, because every piece is designed for one room. Instead, we measure, go through the design and then quote in writing, naming the materials and finish. To arrange a design visit, message us from the contact page.
