Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hackney Central
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hackney Central?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. A van may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a parking bay suspension, which the council arranges, often with notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan around it.
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Hackney Central?
Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, internal works that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Can you fit wardrobes under a sloping ceiling?
Yes. Many loft rooms have sloping ceilings, and fitted wardrobes are one of the best ways to use them. The slope is measured during the design visit and the wardrobe scribed to it on site.
Do you work in Hackney Central?
Yes. Hackney Central is part of the area we cover. To arrange a design visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.
Do you make the furniture yourselves?
Everything is built in our workshop for your room, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
Can you add sockets inside the units?
No. Any new wiring, sockets or lights need an electrician. We plan the furniture around where they’ll go.
How we make fitted wardrobes for Hackney Central
You can choose hinged or sliding doors. With hinged doors, you see a full section when you open them, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors suit tighter rooms, but only part of the inside is open at any one time. We weigh them up with you at the design visit. We make fitted wardrobes from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand, and the usual reasons to get in touch are clothes piled on chairs and in spare rooms and a bedroom that never feels tidy.
Spare rooms in flats usually have more than one job, and closed storage lets the room change role without clutter. Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Hackney Central. We plan the space in front so every door and drawer opens fully.
After the design visit, we send you a written quote. It describes the design we discussed, the materials and the finish, so you know exactly what you are getting.

Fitted bedroom furniture in Hackney Central
Homes built before 1919 make up about 33% of the housing in the area around Hackney Central, with about 24% built between 1945 and 1972, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. That matters for fitted wardrobes, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. 23 conservation areas have at least part of their area less than a mile from the middle of Hackney Central. England has around 10,000 in all, and their controls are largely about how buildings look from outside. Parking on many inner London streets is controlled, with zones run by each borough. That normally means a van in Hackney Central needs a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council. Tell us what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
If you live near Haggerston Park, a bedroom facing the green is best kept light, with the furniture on the side walls. If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like The New Lansdowne Club, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. For a listed home, fixing into original features may need listed building consent. Sutton House, about 0.5 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind fitted wardrobes is part of the design.

Honest limits
Some parts of a job need another trade, like an electrician, a plumber or a Gas Safe engineer. Here’s what to know:
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
- The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
- Painting walls and ceilings, or repairing plaster
If in doubt, you can message us from the contact page and describe the room before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.
Materials and parts
- Hanging rails, shelves and drawers
- Moisture-resistant MDF
- Hand-painted finish
- Spray-painted finish
- Birch plywood
- Hinged or sliding doors
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
With the carcasses fixed and level, we hang any doors and fit any drawers or lids. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly. How long fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and the fitting days are set out in your quote. Some buildings have a concierge, a lift booking system or set working hours, so check them with the managing agent before fitting day. Communal areas and floors are protected on the way in.
- You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
- We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
- We send a written quote with the layout, materials and finish.
- The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
- Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung. The rails, shelves and drawers go in last.
Preparing the room
- Keep pets out of the room and the hallway
- Clear the area where the furniture is going
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
Arranging a design visit
Photos help us understand the room before we visit. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them tell us a lot about the space, especially with rough sizes. To share them, use our contact form, and we will suggest a time for a design visit.
Advice
What it costs
Not every room costs the same, and it comes down to:
- Stairs, lifts and the route to the room
- The finish: spray painted or hand painted
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How big the furniture is
Every room is priced on its own, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. Spray painting and hand painting are different processes, which affects the cost. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.
What to send when you get in touch
You do not need exact measurements or a plan. Just send what you can:
- Rough measurements: width, height and depth
- Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
- Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
- Any ideas or images you have saved
Rough sizes are fine at the start. We measure everything properly during the design visit, including how level the floor and ceiling are. To arrange it, get in touch through our contact form. You receive a written quote after the visit.
Is bespoke worth it?
Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. If you’re renting or moving soon, that may matter most. Built-in wardrobes become part of the house and are made for that room alone. Ready-made units cannot follow the boxing and risers found in many flats, so it ends up with gaps or blocks access. Built-in pieces are designed around them, with access kept.
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, and that’s part of the price. Because every job is different, the cost is set out in a written quote after the visit.

Flats, conversions and lettings
Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit.
Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there’s a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Tell us about it when you contact us.
