Hackney Wick Fitted Wardrobes
Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. We make fitted wardrobes for homes in Hackney Wick, each designed at a visit to your home.
- Space under the eaves going to waste
- Dusty space on top of the wardrobe
- Wardrobes that are full to bursting

Fitted wardrobes for homes in Hackney Wick
Doors can be hinged or sliding. Hinged doors open a whole section at once, but they need clear space in front to swing. Sliding doors save that space in a narrow room, although only part of the wardrobe is open at a time. Which suits your room is something we talk through when we visit. If you’re living with too little room for clothes and a sloping ceiling that’s hard to use, that is what fitted wardrobes are for, made from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed.
In a home built since 2000, stud walls may hide pipes and cables, so the walls are checked before anything is fixed. Many homes around Hackney Wick date from 2000 onwards, so this check is routine. Heavy pieces are fixed into the studs or stand on the floor.
Materials are named in the quote: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, each used where it suits the job. The finish is stated too, whether that’s spray painting or hand painting.

Bedroom storage in Hackney Wick
About 65% of the homes in the neighbourhood around Hackney Wick went up since 2000, and about 15% between 1973 and 1999, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. Hackney Wick is partly covered by the Fish Island Conservation Area, one of the conservation areas recorded by Historic England. Fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission in a conservation area, as the controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings. The council can confirm if you are not sure. About 76% of households in the neighbourhood around Hackney Wick live in purpose-built flats, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.
Close to Mabley Green? Morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they will not shade the window. Near listed buildings like Church of St Mary of Eton, less than half a mile north-west of the centre of Hackney Wick, older homes may keep original joinery that fitted wardrobes can be designed around. For a listed home, fixing into original features can require listed building consent. For a family home near Mossbourne Riverside Academy, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else.
Hackney Wick is about 3 miles south-west of Whitechapel, in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Wherever you are in Hackney Wick, it works the same way: we visit and measure, send a quote in writing, make the furniture in our workshop and fit it. Our work takes in places right across Tower Hamlets.

Flat-pack or bespoke?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that are not square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths.
How fitting works for fitted wardrobes
Every fitting follows the same order: we protect the floors, bring the sections in, set them level, scribe them to the walls, fix them and finish them. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. The time the fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Fitting day starts by covering floors and setting out the sections. The pieces are levelled and fixed with fixings that suit the wall. Hand-painted finishes can be completed once the furniture is in.
- You get in touch and tell us about the bedroom.
- We visit to measure the room and talk through the design. We also look at the way in, in case the sections need to go up narrow stairs.
- We send a quote in writing for the wardrobes, so you can see what’s included.
- Each section is built in our workshop to the room’s measurements, sized to get through your doors and up the stairs.
- The wardrobes are fitted in your home, set level and scribed to the walls and ceiling.
Preparing the room
- Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture
- Empty the space we will be working in
- Take down pictures, mirrors and shelves from the wall

Bespoke fitted wardrobes or ready-made?
Standard wardrobes can’t follow a slope. A bespoke wardrobe can be shaped to follow the slope, with hanging where it’s tall and drawers or shelves where it is low. In a newer flat, big flat-pack units can be hard to get into the lift or through the door, whereas fitted furniture is made in sections that fit. The sections are joined and fixed once inside.
How it’s painted is part of the price: spray painting is done in the workshop, while hand painting can be done on site. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.
What you get with us

Your questions about fitted wardrobes in Hackney Wick
Will a conservation area stop me having fitted wardrobes fitted in Hackney Wick?
Normally not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. Listed buildings are different, as works inside that affect their character may need listed building consent from the council. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.
Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Hackney Wick?
It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you at the measuring visit.
How is the price worked out?
Size, doors and drawers, what goes inside and the finish all affect it. We send a quote in writing after the design visit.
Do you cover Hackney Wick?
Yes. We cover Hackney Wick and the rest of Tower Hamlets, as part of our work across all London boroughs. To get a quote, drop us a line using the contact form.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
We need someone to let us in. It’s good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Is it OK to put a wardrobe on an outside wall?
Yes, as long as it’s ventilated. External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so we plan airflow behind and within it, which helps avoid condensation.
Honest limits
Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work are not part of what we do. There are a few other points to bear in mind:
- Redecorating around the wardrobes
- Any wiring or new sockets (your electrician handles those)
- Curing damp, which needs the right specialist

What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
The price for your room depends on:
- Doors and drawers, and how many
- The overall size of the piece
- How square the room is
- Parking and unloading on your street
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. It’s useful to talk about parking at the measuring visit.
