Fitted Home Offices in Kidbrooke

In Kidbrooke, we design fitted home offices around the room you actually have. We design your home office at a visit to your home, make it in our workshop and fit it.

  • No proper place to work from home
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Wanting to close the door on work at the end of the day

Fitted home offices in Kidbrooke

About our fitted home offices in Kidbrooke

In a period room, an alcove is often the right size for a compact desk. We scribe the desk and shelving to the alcove walls, which are rarely straight. The opposite alcove can carry shelves or a cupboard to match. It makes a working corner that suits the room, in Kidbrooke or anywhere else. If your home has a screen that’s hard to read by the window and a laptop that moves from room to room, that’s what home offices are for, made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

The bay window in a 1930s front room or bedroom gives good daylight for a desk, with shelving or cupboards along the walls beside it. Much of the housing around Kidbrooke is interwar, semi-detached or detached. A desk can follow the shape of the bay or bridge its opening.

A quote in writing is the clearest record of what we have agreed. It describes the home office we’ve designed for the room, what it is made from and how it’s finished, and the workshop works from it.

Practical tips

These points come up often when people plan fitted home offices. They’re worth knowing whatever the room:

  • Think about where the sockets are now
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Notice where daylight falls at different times
  • Consider your chair when planning the desk

Once the fitting is done, your office is ready to use. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. Use a mat under a laptop or anything with rubber feet while the paint hardens.

Use a mat or coasters on the desk for hot drinks. Mop up spills quickly. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

Off-the-shelf desks leave you to work out the cables. A fitted desk can have routes built in for chargers, screens and printers. It keeps things neat above and below the desk. Bays, box rooms and stair bulkheads are where off-the-shelf furniture struggles most, and those are common in interwar houses. Built-in pieces are designed to fit them.

The inside of the furniture affects the price as well: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers all add work. We’ll talk through what you need inside during the design visit, then set it out in the quote.

Why choose Bespoke Carpentry in Kidbrooke

  • Scribed to uneven walls
  • Saturday visits and fitting by arrangement
  • Made in moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood
  • Designed for the room you have

See how bespoke compares with ready-made and what to look for in a quote.

When is bespoke worth it?

Standard units come in set widths and heights, so there’s often a strip of wasted space at the side or above. Furniture we make is built to the room’s own sizes, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.

Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. Older London rooms tend to have leaning walls, sloping floors and alcoves of different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Does a conservation area in or near Kidbrooke affect fitted furniture?

Usually not: conservation area rules mainly cover the outside of buildings, and fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, works inside that affect its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

Will parking be an issue for fitting furniture in Kidbrooke?

It can be, as controlled parking zones cover much of inner London. Depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed, and suspensions often need notice. Let us know what parking is near you during the design visit, so we can plan the day around it.

What does a built-in desk cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. The size of the room, the amount of desk, shelving and storage, and the finish all shape the price. To get a quote, message us from the contact page and we will arrange a design visit.

Is an alcove big enough for a desk?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. We scribe it to the walls, which are rarely straight in a period room. We’ll check the size at the design visit.

Do you work in Kidbrooke?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Kidbrooke included.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

It’s a chance to measure properly and talk through what you’d like. We look at the walls, floors and anything the furniture has to work around, then send a quote in writing.

Fitted home offices for homes in Kidbrooke

In the area around Kidbrooke, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 60%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 13%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. Part of Kidbrooke is in a conservation area, going by Historic England’s data. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, and fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If you want to be certain, ask the council’s planning team. TfL’s Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every part of London, Greenwich included. That includes the vans that bring and fit furniture in Kidbrooke. Parking and access are planned at the design visit.

Living in a block of flats near Kidbrooke station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. Eltham Palace, about 1.3 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, lath-and-plaster walls need the right fixings for shelves above a desk. Close to Eltham Common? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight.

How fitting day works

Every fitting follows the same order: floors are protected, the sections come in, everything is levelled, scribed to the walls, fixed and finished. At the end, we tidy up and go over the work with you. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. A front path or side gate can make the carry from the van simpler. We measure the path, any steps and the front door as part of the route. Floors, stairs and doorways are protected on the way in, and the sections are assembled in place.

  1. It starts when you get in touch about a home office. A line on how you work helps too.
  2. We visit to measure and talk about the equipment you use.
  3. A written quote follows, with the fitting days agreed. You can ask us about any part of it.
  4. We make the desk, shelves and cupboards in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The office is fitted and set level, ready for your first day at the desk, with the cable routes left open.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything in the hall or on the stairs out of the way
  • Clear the area where the furniture is going
  • Point out meters, boilers and fuse boards near the furniture

How we price fitted home offices

What you pay depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Spray painting or hand painting
  • How big the furniture is
  • Stairs, lifts and the route to the room

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. The price depends mainly on the size of the piece, how many doors and drawers it has and what goes inside.

Helping us understand the room

Ahead of the design visit, we will typically ask about:

  • Whether it is a house or a flat, and if there are stairs or a lift
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • Rough measurements, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
