About our fitted home offices in Eltham

Everything in a home office starts with the desk. It’s made at a height and depth to suit you and the way you work, with drawers or cupboards beneath where they’re useful. Shelves and cupboards can be planned around it. We will talk through the details at the design visit in Eltham. Typical reasons to get in touch are no way to put work away and a spare room that has to be an office and a guest room, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.

Many homes around Eltham date from the post-war decades, and London’s post-war housing includes flats in blocks as well as houses. In a flat, the office often shares a room, so a desk that closes away helps. Each piece is made in sections that fit the stairs or lift.

You get the quote in writing, so you can read it at your own pace. It covers the design, materials and finish agreed at the visit.

From workshop to your room

At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together. How long the fitting takes depends on how much desk, shelving and storage you want, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote. Stairwells in post-war blocks can have tight turns, so sections are sized for both the stairs and any lift. Letting the caretaker or managing agent know ahead of time helps. We cover the floors in shared areas on the way in.

  1. First we hear about your work and the room you have in mind, whether that is a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. We measure the room, look at the light and note the sockets. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. The design is agreed and a written quote follows, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is made at our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Starting with a design visit

Every quote follows a design visit. At the visit, we measure, look at the walls and floors and discuss the design with you, and the written quote comes after. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. To arrange a visit, use our contact form.

Advice

FAQs: fitted home offices in Eltham

Do you cover homes near Mottingham station?

Yes, homes across Greenwich and the rest of London are within the area we cover. To get started, you can send us a few details through our contact form with a few details about the room.

Does a conservation area in or near Eltham affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are largely about how buildings look from outside, so fitted furniture inside a house doesn’t normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character can require listed building consent, so check with the council first. If you are unsure, the council can confirm.

How long is the fitting for a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Every part is built in our workshop before we arrive. If you’d like the fitting on a Saturday, that can be arranged.

What happens at the measuring visit?

We measure the room, check how level the walls and floors are and go through the design with you. Access and parking are worth talking about too, and afterwards we send a quote in writing.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

That comes down to the size of the alcove. Lots of alcoves suit a small desk, with shelving above and drawers below. We measure and give an honest view at the design visit.

Looking after your furniture

Getting the most from fitted home offices starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • Consider doors to hide work at the end of the day
  • Check whether you will need new sockets
  • Mention any parking rules on your street
  • Bring paint colours you like to the design visit

Any sockets or wiring are for your electrician, and the furniture leaves room for them. Show them the cable routes so everything lines up. Keeping cables in their routes keeps the desk tidy.

Hot mugs can mark paint, so a coaster is a good habit. Keep liquids away from the edge. A desk mat under the keyboard and mouse saves wear on the surface.

What fitted home offices cannot fix

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It’s useful to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plastering and decorating around the office
  • Building a loft conversion, which is not our work
  • New sockets, data points or wiring, which are for your electrician

If you’re not sure what’s possible in your room, you can fill in our short enquiry form and we will give you a straight answer before you arrange a visit. Our process from visit to fitting.

What it is made from

  • Cable routes
  • Spray-painted finish
  • Moisture-resistant MDF
  • Birch plywood
  • Hand-painted finish
  • Filing drawers
  • Built-in desks

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

In a flat, the route in matters as much as the room. At the design visit, we measure the stairs, the landings, any lift and the doors, so the furniture can be made in sections that fit through without a struggle.

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them during the design visit, and we will plan the fitting around them.

What affects the price in Eltham

Several things affect the price:

  • The width and height of the space
  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • The internal fittings

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

What helps most when you first contact us:

  • Anything in the way, like radiators, sockets, switches, a boiler or meters
  • What you’d like to store or use the space for
  • Any ideas or images you’ve saved
  • A few photos of the space, taken from the doorway and from each corner

To get a quote, fill in our short enquiry form and let us know which room you have in mind and what you want the furniture to do. From there, we arrange a design visit to measure up and talk through your ideas, and a written quote follows.
