Lisson Grove Fitted Home Offices

Few London rooms are perfectly square, and we scribe the furniture to follow the walls. Our work on fitted home offices in Lisson Grove starts with a design visit, and everything is built in our workshop.

  • An alcove or landing that could take a desk
  • A tangle of chargers and leads
  • Flimsy shelves that won’t take the weight

Fitted home offices for homes in Lisson Grove

The biggest shares of homes in the area around Lisson Grove were built before 1919 (about 37%) and between 1945 and 1972 (about 18%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. That matters for home offices, as the build era decides whether a wall is solid brick, lath and plaster, block or plasterboard. Entries on the National Heritage List near the centre of Lisson Grove include Hanover Terrace (Grade I), less than half a mile north-east, and Nuffield Lodge (Grade I), under half a mile north. If you live in a listed building, fixing into or taking out original features such as panelling may need listed building consent. An early word with the council’s conservation officer is the best first step. About 77% of households in the area around Lisson Grove live in purpose-built flats, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. For a flat, home offices are made in sections sized for the stairs, the lift and the doors. Many blocks have rules on lift booking and working hours, so check with the managing agent before fitting day.

For an older house near St Paul's Community Church, a small back bedroom can become a home office with a desk under the window. Close to Regent's Park? A desk facing a window makes the most of the daylight. For a flat near London Marylebone station, it helps to book the lift and tell the concierge before fitting day.

About our fitted home offices in Lisson Grove

We make each home office in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood. Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, which suits desks and long shelves, while MDF takes paint well for the doors and panels. Once painted, by spray or by hand, it’s brought to your home in Lisson Grove and fitted. We make home offices from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and the things people most often want solved are an alcove or landing that could take a desk and a room with two jobs to do.

Purpose-built flats are home to most households around Lisson Grove, and in a flat, working from home normally means sharing space with something else. Home offices can sit in a recess, a corner of the living room or a bedroom wall. Each piece is made in sections sized for the stairs, lift and doors.

The furniture is made at our workshop after you have had the quote and decided to go ahead. The quote sets out the agreed design, materials and finish, so every detail can be checked first.

Boards, parts and paint

Shelves

Office shelving often carries heavy loads. Span, depth and load all matter. We size each shelf to carry its load without sagging.

Spray-painted finish

Spray painting gives the desk and doors a very even surface. We apply it in our workshop, so treat it gently while it cures fully.

Before and after fitting day

None of this takes much effort. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Think about the space you need to push back
  • Tell us about parking at the design visit
  • Decide how much should be open shelving and how much behind doors
  • Think about what will sit on the shelves

When we’ve finished fitting, the desk and storage are ready. New paintwork takes time to cure fully, so go easy on it to begin with. A desk mat helps protect the new paint while it settles.

Every so often, look at the handles and hinges. A loose screw is easy to tighten before it works loose. If a door drops or a drawer catches, fill in our short enquiry form and tell us.

Common questions about fitted home offices

Does a conservation area in or near Lisson Grove affect fitted furniture?

Not normally. Conservation area controls are mostly concerned with the outside of buildings, so fitted furniture inside a house does not normally need planning permission. If your home is listed, changes inside that alter its character may need listed building consent, so check with the council first. The council’s planning or conservation team can tell you if in doubt.

My home in Lisson Grove is a flat. How do you get the furniture in?

At the design visit, we measure the way in as well as the room. Home offices are made at our workshop in sections sized to fit that route, then assembled in your flat. If your building has rules on lift booking or working hours, or your lease needs consent for alterations, it is worth checking those early.

How long does it take to fit a home office?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. We make the desk and storage in our workshop, so the time at your home is spent fitting. Saturday fitting is possible by prior arrangement.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, though we like to go over the furniture with you at the end.

Can a desk be fitted into an alcove?

Often, yes. A desk with shelving over it can fit neatly in an alcove. It’s scribed to the alcove walls so it fits closely. At the design visit we’ll measure and tell you what fits.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

Uneven walls are normal in older London homes, and the furniture is made to deal with them. Edges are scribed to the wall, and adjustable feet or a plinth bring the furniture up to level.

Fitting day, step by step

Period rooms often have skirting boards, picture rails, cornices or coving for the furniture to meet. On fitting day, we cut and scribe the furniture around these details, so it looks as though it was always there. How long fitting takes depends on the layout and how many pieces make up the office, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote. Many blocks have entry systems, concierge desks or rules on booking the lift, so it is worth checking with the managing agent in advance. Floors in the flat and the common parts are protected while the furniture comes in.

  1. You let us know how you work and where you’d like the office, whether that’s a spare room, an alcove or a landing.
  2. At the design visit, the room is measured and the layout planned. Cable routes are planned at this point.
  3. We agree the desk, shelving and storage, and send a quote in writing, with the finish set out.
  4. Every part is built in our workshop, ready for a spray-painted or hand-painted finish. The materials are moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit it in your home and check every drawer and door with you. The cable routes are left ready to use.

Preparing the room

  • Let us know where the boiler and meters are
  • If you live in a block, book the lift and tell the building manager
  • Clear the walls of pictures and shelves

Ask for a quote

Getting a quote starts with a few details: which room it is, rough measurements and a couple of pictures if you can take them. When you’re ready, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a written quote.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

If you’re handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That’s something we plan for in the design.

What affects the cost of fitted home offices

What it costs comes down to the materials and the time involved. That depends on:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • The width and height of the space
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • How easy it is to get the furniture into the room

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That is reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Getting in touch

These details help when you contact us:

  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • How you want to use the space
  • The type of home and how the room is reached
  • Your postcode and the borough

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Because every room is different, the quote comes after the design visit, once the room is measured and the design talked through. To arrange a visit, drop us a line using the contact form.
